Me and the CHP
« on: August 25, 2012, 06:07:49 PM »
Coming home on the 101 going just a little faster then traffic but even so still going 15mph over the limit. Then I see him. "Ahhh crap here we go." I think to myself as the guy with the badge swoops in behind me. Well crap I'm busted so I don't even slow down. He sits behind me for just a second or two pulls into the next lane and moves up beside me. It was a CHP on his Concours! I look over point at his bike and give him a thumbs up, he gives me the slightest og nods and speeds off down the freeway. What do you think, was it the fact I was on Connie that saved my butt?
If it can't be fixed with a hammer you can sure as hell teach it a lesson.

I usually attribute it to being full ATGATT...  or his seeing thru the helmet and noticing the amount of gray.   8)   Then I haven't had a speeding ticket in over 20 years.  :)

Some cops don't bother you unless you're being an idiot. A lot of police officers like bikes and fast cars. My son-in-law is a cop and knows all the good roads to have fun. I'm pretty sure if you are doing it safely they won't bother you or just give you a warning. You just don't know if they are bad cops or good cops. Also helps if they like your bike!! 8)

I dont know what gear you wear when you ride. I have got away with warnings on two ocassions. Both times the LEO's final words were "thanks for wearing all of your gear". Im sure it helped that you were riding an awesome bike. Someday I hope to have one, but I will never get rid of my C-10's.

As the comics used to say 'It couldn't hoit none'.

Hard saddlebags seem to ward off LEO's. I am convinced that one of us old guys, riding a bike carrying hard luggage and traveling at 80 MPH is not going nearly as fast as that kid riding that pointy sport bike at 80 MPH. I am not saying touring or sport touring bikes and old riders are immune to speeding infractions but I think we are less susceptible to the illness.  ;)

Here in Ohio, the State and locals all respect the ATGATT rider. 2 friends I ride with are cops, as well as my son-in-law. They will give the ATGATT rider a pass, providing the speed isn't causing a traffic problem or is 20 over. I personally had a State P cruise up next to me on the way home a few weeks back. I was in the middle lane of I70 going home from work, and was doing 80 by my GPS. I just didn't see him coming up on me, I glanced, he nodded, I slowed to 75, he nodded again and then took off.
There was no traffic within a 1/4 mile or so in front or benind me, he had me dead to rights. I think the ATGATT saved my bacon on this days ride.
Just seems like another good reason to ATGATT, like it needs to be said.
Ride safe all, and please, gear-up.
Greg

ATGATT.  Things have really gone to hell in Michigan since the no helmet law. Seems the dress is T-shirts,shorts and sneakers. Fine but he has his wife-girlfriend on the back wearing the same thing. Wonder how he's going to feel when she becomes a bloody mess when they go down.

Well I was ATGATT, full face, gloves, good boots and hi-viz jacket with CE protection. Chippy? Short sleeves, no gloves and open face helmet. He probably rides better then me.

You Americans are lucky I mean realy lucky .
Downunder 30Kilometre per hour ( about 17 mph )over the speed limit will get you the following
 $799 fine
loss of 5 points  you only have 12 points to last you 39 months
If it is on a long weekend or holiday period that will be 10 points

This morning (Sunday )  they had a radar trap in my street at 7.30 in the morning . This street has about 2000 cars per day from figure I have seen .

I some states you will get booked for doing  62kph in a 60 zone ( about 39 mph in a 37 zone ) .

That's one of the reasons I enjoy driving the USA ,you Police are understanding .

I think the "appearances" theory applies to many things concerning whether or not you receive special attention from the law. One case in point is virtually every campground I've ever been to, state, federal and family owned where rules and regs firmly state that no alcohol is allowed within the park or campground, or maybe just on your site. Pour a beer or glass of wine into a discreet cup, respect your neighbors, don't make noise, drink responsibly, follow the other rules and you know what? Police will drive by and wave with full knowledge of whats going on. Here in NE, OH, we have a real nice outdoor concert hall, rock bands and fine arts music is played, guess which venue gets to sell alcohol and allows open containers and also allows private alcohol to be brought in openly? Hint.....its not when the rock bands play, and over the past over 10 years that its been happening, guess how many alcohol related incidents have happened? Hint.... less than 1. So, back to the point, wearing full gear saves lives AND money!

My son is a CHP motor officer and from what he's said to me if your not acting stupid or exceeding 80mph you get a pass.
As to the Kawasaki CHP bike, my son said the company supplying the bikes is no longer in business and has failed to fullfill
the order.  The CHP is out shopping for a new ride once again.
He's been riding the BMW for 5 years now but got a chance to try the Kawi on a training day and didn't care for it.  According to
him it's definintely faster and a better pulling engine but also has a larger turning radius and definintely less stable over bad terrain than the
BMW.  I would imagine that they'll go back to the BMW for stability reasons as they have in the past.
