Surprising PR-3s wore out fast.
« on: October 05, 2012, 05:21:15 PM »
Got a flat today in the rear. Looks like it was a nail. Realized that they are worn beyond my insurance will cover with only 8000 miles on them. I can usually gut upwards of 17,000 miles out of them. My last tire was from the dealer changed under insurance for free. Maybe he gets cheap 2nd tires or didn't ballance them. Who knows. Time to look into Murph's again.

8,000 is about normal for my rear pr3's..  maybe you finally found the throttle?  :)

I've never got 8,000 miles out of any tire.

Always on the throttle. I mainly stay on the upper speeds(highway) 80-110mph. daily. I have put over 80,000 miles on 2 seperate C-14s. Keeping the ride style the same. Still shows 42 mpg. Might go back to PR2s.

I can't imagine how you would have to ride to get 17,000 miles on a tire unless it is a hard compound touring tire.  My PR2s are by far the best lasting tire I have had and I could probably push them to get 9,000 if I didn't mine them getting squared off and running them to zero tread.

How long do your brake pads last?

Hey Scaf, nice avatar BTW.  I average 12k per set, were it not for 2 trips to the track I would probably get 15k.  I would say you are easy on the throttle and brakes (not slow, rather smooth), kinda hard to have exciting times on a route you take 5 times a week.  Have you tried the Angels yet?  Check out Jake Wilson http://www.jakewilson.com/

I got 11,000 out of my PR2's (front & rear), by far the highest mileage of any tire I've ever used.

I can squeeze 11k out of a rear PR2 but only 9k out of a PR3. I did get 13k out of a front PR3 which is the same as the PR2 but that was pushing the front too far. As far as gas goes I average 36mpg but as soon as the temps drop to the 40's I drop to 32mpg.

I am going to order a set of PR2s from Murphs. I don't think I want to try Angels. I run Dunlop Roadsmarts on my last C-14 and managed over 12,000 miles on them.
I had to get new brakes on my current C-14 at around 24,000 miles and they were toast. My previous C-14 made it over 40,000 miles before needing brake pads. It is the price we must pay to have these awful linked brakes.

12000 front and 8000 rear on 2 sets of PR3's now. I've gotten 16,000 on an Avon Venom on a Valkyrie but 12,000 and change on a front PR3 is the most I have gotten on any tire on my C14. 8000 and change is the most I've gotten on the rear on the C14. If you got 17,000 miles on a tire on a C14 that's amazing.

I am liking my PR3's 7k and counting but I highly doubt I'll see anything NEAR 17k out of them :)

Same here, if I get 5K I consider myself lucky and I replace them as a set.

I don't hate the Angels. I love the ride on the Michelins. I was just surprised the last pair was toast so fast. I am just going to go back to my PR2s. If I had just a little more tread on it My tire insurance would have fixed it for free again.
I ended going with Motorcycle Superstore. The pair was under $300. My mechanic will throw them on for another $50. Hopefully be done by Friday. It'll be a long week and a lot of gas!!! For the car.

I usually get 12-15k out of a rear PR3. Fronts go 18-20k. I get 44-46mpg (but can get as high as the low 50's if I need to). Front brake pads go about 30k, rear pads...well, the OEM set went 56k.

This tire has about 15k on it.

Haha, I've yet to get 8K out of any motorcycle tire. Even my cruiser tires had less then 7K before they needed changing...

I have no idea why either. I never ride aggressively or go above the posted speed limit, WTF! :)
