Florida to Oregon via Fire Truck
« on: August 17, 2012, 11:35:49 PM »
If this doesn't hit the local news on his return trip, something is wrong.

So I ran into Varieze driver Gil Hutchison at the Independence (Oregon) fly-in
BBQ tonight and he told me that another local Varieze flyer, Chuck Eddings, flew
to Florida to pick up a new fire truck for his department. (Chuck is the fire
chief in nearby Williamina).

I thought nothing of it: after all, what's the big deal about flying an airliner
to Florida and driving back. But then Gil explained that Chuck didn't fly an
airliner but rather his Varieze. And he was hauling it back to Oregon by fire
truck! Gil said Chuck removed the wings and loaded everything onto the fire truck.

It was hard to visualize but then I received an email from Chuck with the
attached picture

Wow....
First thought: Holy Hell, that's a LONG trip in a Varieze!!
Second thought: Holy Hell, that's gonna take about $2500 in diesel to hump that truck back!

Hmmm, I wonder, will this truck fly if we reverse Varieze, reinstall the wings and hit about 100mph?  :P

How did he get it in the truck?
How will he get it out of the truck?
    Where are the wings?
     What is a Varieze??

I went to college 5 miles from Indepence, OR in Monmouth. The only dry town west of the mississippi. And by dry I don't mean rain.

great idea! If you have to ferry a big truck from one side of the country to the other, fly a small airplane there and truck it back. The only other way that might be better would be to ride a Connie there and truck it back.

Only weighs about 600lbs empty, take the wings off and just the fuselage would be less then 500lbs. 3 or 4 stout fireman could put it in or take it out easy.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutan_VariEze

The heck with driving the fire truck across the country, I wouldn't want to fly that thing across the country.
