Handlebar Grip modification/installation?
« on: July 22, 2012, 09:59:19 AM »
I bought some hand grips from murphs.

On the throttle side, the OEM grip has a flange that fits over like 3 plastic nubs on the throttle tube.  Since the new grip doesn't have the "hood/flange" that goes over the nubs I suspect the nubs can be trimmed off the tube and since the new grips have a 2nd flange, I believe the 2nd one can be trimmed off as well since the grip would be long enough without it.

What do you think?

All I trim off of Murph's grips is the very end where the bar end weight has to go.  I use a razor to cut right in the groove near the "cap" (outside) end of the grip.  Fits very nicely with both of the "flanges" intact on the inside.

And yes, you can sand off those plastic nubs on the throttle tube.

I cut mine in the groove at the bar end.

That's what I was attempting to convey.  Your picture makes it far clearer.

Ok, thanks.  I understood both posts regarding the bar weight end.

Still curious as to the nubs.  I know I can trim them off but is that what is recommended?  I've never seen any aftermarket grips than have the "hood" which goes over them so I guess there is no reason to keep them.

I trimmed the raised ridges from the plastic throttle tube itself and bored a hole in the end of the rubber grip with a cone shaped stone in a die grinder.

Thanks for the pic.  Those look good.

On the throttle side, do you think the old O-ring throttle position holder (cruise control) would work or would it be best to trim the end off that grip to allow the ring a place to set?

Update - I got the grips installed and they are great.  Kinda kick myself for not doing it many years ago.

The only part I trimmed off was the endcap.  Fits perfect.  On the throttle side there is a little less surface area on the end of the new grips for the old o-ring throttle "lock" to grip but it works fine, just watch the gap as you install grips and bar end cap and adjust the grip accordingly because you want a little gap there so the o-ring can roll into it.

Another thing, there are nubs on the inside and outside edge of the throttle tube.  I was surprised about the outside nubs but there was no adhesive on the throttle side because they use nubs to hold the grip.  I dremmeled off all the nubs and used grip glue on both sides.

T Cro,
How long were the replacement brake lines for the handlebar modification?  Were they about 18 inches?

I'd have to measure and can do that in a few days but my measurements would be of no good to most of you guys as I run a completely different front-end on my bike. My front-end is from a ZRX1200 with 1" bar risers and Concours Heli-Bar Handle Bars.

Tony, is that bar setup you have there significantly higher than stock Concours? Do you immediately notice the diff when you get on somebody else's bike?
Question #2: Is the riding position easier on the back than stock?

Question #2: Is the riding position easier on the back than stock?

My bars measure about 7" from the face of the triple to the center of the bars which should only be about 1.5" taller than stock Concours clip-on bars.

But I will say that the adjustability of the Heli-Bars makes all the difference in the world for me. Previous to getting them I had stock Concours bars with GenMar risers and was having so much hand pain even on short rides that I was never any closer to selling the bike as for me not sitting in a slight forward crouch defeats the purpose of owning a Sport-Touring bike.

This is where the real appeal of the Heli-Bars and their full adjustability comes into play as while my position might only differ only slightly from stock my hands land naturally and comfortably right to the grips with near to no long term discomfort. And should a change be needed it is only an hex key away.

To which I'm one of the few who realized that I wanted a slightly more sporting seating position as I use rear-set (straight) pegs not forward or lowered too.

Ah, gotcha! That's an excellent arrangement, I can see where you are leaning towards sporty rather than cruise...I'm working on going in the other direction, got a pair of risers and want to make the Concours more on the upright-seating cruiser side of things if I can...
