Sena SMH10 Questions
« on: August 26, 2012, 04:07:02 PM »
Searched the forum and read a lot on the Sena headsets, and come to the conclusion the SMH10 set is the one for me.

Have a few questions maybe someone can chime in on. Looked on the net and haven't found any answers.

-I need the dual pack. I see on several different sights the SMH10D-10 and SMH10D-11, which I can find no difference in them. I assume the 11 is just a newer model? The "D" I assume is for the dual mic option. When I look at either of these, there is no mention of being firmware up-datable. Should I assume ALL new models have this ability? The Sena main site doesn't even have these listed.

-Searched for these on Amazon and "Sena" comes up as the seller. For the dual set they have a price of $284 with free shipping, but the main Sena website has them priced at $399. Is the Amazon connection legit? I know I can get them on Radiorider or Revzilla for $299.

-Is it worth spending the few extra dollars to get the universal mic set (boom and wired)? Has anyone had problems using the boom mic with their full-face helmets? Friend will be using the extra one on our trips and I won't know if the boom will work with his since he's in another state.

My wife and I recently purchased the Sena SMH10 (dual pack) and we are very pleased. The SMH10 firmware upgradable, just upgraded to the 4.1 version. We also have full face helmets and I use my (bluetooth) phone making calls by voice dial on the interstate at speeds of 80mph with no problems. The volume is very adjustable and plenty loud at these speeds. The range of 1/2 mile and usable battery life of 10 hours we have tested and is acurate. Great system and worth the money in my opinion.

We purchased ours on ebay from an individual still new in the box ($250). Look around for a great price, never know what you may find.

We have SMH-10's too.  We like them.  I have them set for VOX.  Mine always has a little hiss coming thru the speakers. Can't hear it with earplugs in.  I upgraded to the 4.1 firmware, didn't like it.  Lost about 25% in volume.  So went we back to the 4.0 firmware

Don't assume all the sets you see are updatable.  There's still stock out there that aren't updatable and sometimes you can't find that out until you get the sets unfortunately.  If they're cheap, there may be a reason.

Was the model number of your dual pack SMH10D-10 or D-11?? Boom mic only?

Think I found answers to my model questions. Just found this comparison chart of the units on RadioRider. All these SMH10 models in question are PC Update-able.

http://radiorider.com/headsets/bluetooth-helmet-headset-comparison.html

Now what's everyone's opinion on the boom mic vs wired mic. Full-face helmet specifically.

DamagedGoods (my husband) and I have modular, full faced helmets with the boom mic. Works perfectly -- no issues and plenty of room. The arm that holds it is pretty flexible and you can move it around inside once your helmet is on if you need to. Once you've got it situated, you can leave it alone.

I've had the SENA for 18 months maybe.  Of course mine is not upgradable so I hope my GPS continues to function.  I can pair with the newer SENA units.

The upgradable ones us a mini-usb connector for charging and connecting to the computer.  Mine uses a round power connection to charge, plus I can charge on the bike while using it.

They work great! I have found that the silence was one of my favorite parts of riding though. I prefer to not chitchat most of the time. Plus, no more singing in my helmet since we've bought them :D Damaged would NOT appreciate my rendition of "My Heart Will Go On."

I just had a SMH-10 replaced (plug in for the charger broke) and Sena sent me the updated version.  Great customer service and I ended up with a better product, how can you go wrong...... ;D

I went ahead and purchased the set last night from Amazon. The $284 seemed to be the best price I saw, at least from sites I would order from. Went ahead and got the boom and wired mic version just to be safe. I have a big head!!!!!  :o

Plan to do a first-two-weeks of October trip. No clue where I'm going, and feel alright about that! Houston, left turn, head north!  ;D

I'd go wired for the full face helmet. That will allow you to get the mic in the best position without worrying about the limited movement of the boom. Plus, if the install is similar to mine, the wire is MUCH thinner and easier to run under a cheek pad. My (discontinued) wired mic crapped out, so I'm stuck with a boom kit in there. I don't use the mic that much, so I have it jammed up in the breath box to keep it off my nose.

Modular helmet? Boom mic out of necessity.

You can buy just the part that attaches to the helmet without having to buy a new unit.  I have two helmets set up and just plug the unit into the helmet I am using that day.

Yes. If I had a current model (not a Sena), I could still get spare parts. Had to make do with what I had (the old boom kit).

Like twowheel mentions (I'm reading between the lines), get some spare parts for future repairs. I have plenty of spare helmet clamps, but didn't have a spare wired mic kit. You won't need them right away, but as you put miles/hours on the bike, you increase odds for normal wear and tear on your equipment.

I have and extra headset that I need parts for if anyone has a broken main unit that they want to get rid of. Just need the spring loaded contacts on the back of the main unit.       Sena SMH10  .   Thanks
