Givi rack or SW Motech adapter hardware for top case?
« on: July 17, 2012, 06:53:39 PM »
Just ordered a Givi V46 monokey top case. Can I get by with just the SW Motech adapter hardware to mount the case or should I buy the Givi top case rack for an additional $100?

I like the SW Motech racks and wish that they made the rack with the quick lock adapters for their rack, but no such luck on the C14 rack... I have used the Givi adapter and their soft luggage rack when camping in the past on other bikes.  The only thing TT lists is a plain rack that needs the $20 kit for mounting a trunk to it, that may be what you were referring to.  You will need a rack and the SW kit or the Givi rack is an option as well if you need the extra support and plan to carry heavy items in the trunk.  I just bought a Phil's rack for mine with the givi kit already installed.

Unfortunately Phil's rack will not fit my bike. Not the fault of his rack, fault of how my bike's mounting system is shaped like a "V".

My bike has the stock rack on it. I thought the SW Motech mounting adapter allowed a person to mount any Givi monokey case onto the stock rack?

This rack along with the mounting kit I have linked as well will do it:

I doubt you would want to try to drill the holes and mount the kit to the stock plastic rack.  I wouldn't think that would be too strong...  Are the above links what you are referring to?

Did you loosen the reflector bolts when you tried Phils rack?   Thats strange that it would not fit.

I've gotten feedback from a couple people who had difficulty mounting my rack. Some bikes have a higher than normal "crown" in the grabrail supports. My rack is flat and RIGID and won't conform to this like the flexible plastic rack does. TJ was unable to get the rack mounted because of this problem and felt forcing the issue might damage the grabrails. This is only a problem in very rare instances.

Phil designed a set of small rails to go under the rack to raise the mounting point. Works like a charm. Reinstalled his rack & rails and now everything is perfect. Givi V46 monokey case came in today and it is a solid mount to the rack.
Glad I went with the V46 as the proportions seem perfect to match the stock bags.

I have been on many forums on many subjects, but honestly, Phil and Gary (Murph) are two of the nicest business men I have ever dealt with. Always delivering top notch service after the sale. I recently asked Phil about an issue on my rack that I purchased about a year ago...... without hesitation he put the parts in the mail. Thank you Phil .....

I have that same top case and bought the Givi rack to go with it. It's extremely sturdy and the quick release couldn't be easier to use. It was a bit of a pain to install but once on, it isn't going anywhere.
