They didn't have this last time I bought a new bike-Tire/Wheel Protection Plan?

So I picked up the new C14 today (2011 Black with 12 miles, 9 of which I added on the test ride) and going through the paper work they offered me a 5yr Tire/Wheel protection plan for $595 bucks. They said any damage to tires or wheels from any road hazard pot hole, nail, etc. They would provide complete, non-prorated coverage to replace the tire or wheel with factory original.

So this is evidently a new thing, last time I bought a new bike (2001 Connie in 2002) there wasn't nothing like this and I have never heard of such a deal since. 

Do people buy this? I am thinking I have insurance that would cover wheel damage (with a $250 deductible) and tires are getting more and more expensive, so it sounds like it might be worthwhile protection. One dinged wheel or 3-4 tires and I am ahead. The skeptical side of me says it is a scam like most other extended warranties. I said no for now, but they said I could buy it at any time. I am thinking about it, but figured I would see what other peoples experiences have been.

It probably is prorated somehow, so the more wear you have the less they will pay. Otherwise just wait until your tire gets worn out and damage the sidewall and "wall ah" a new tire.

Not something I would buy or have bought in the past. In 50k miles, I have gotten one nail, no dings or bent rims. From what is posted, the plan does not cover normal wear in tires. So, I don't see how tires are going to be replaced under the warranty unless you get a nail or something

What happens to your coverage if the selling dealer goes under?

When I bought my bike the dealer offered the same thing, I declined.

Check the language... I imagine it excludes "normal wear and tear", and only covers true hazards or damage. Cycle Gear offers something similar on their tires... but is clearly just for road damage.

Still... 575 over 5 years... $115 per year... Would be worth it if it covers towing. Otherwise, maybe not so much (unless you're prone to areas with large rocks or potholes in the roads).

You would need to get 3 new tires minimum before it would even begin to pay off.  How many tires have you wrecked in your lifetime of riding?  I count one for me in over 200k of total miles and many years on motorcycles.

Of course, that would be insurance fraud.  Most people aren't willing to go to prision to save a few bucks on a tire.

As for the plan, I believe Scaffolder has a similar 2-year plan on his tires.  IIRC, it is only for new bikes, and is through his work insurance.  Maybe he will find this thread and comment.
