Idle Mix Screws
« on: June 23, 2012, 09:45:28 AM »
Is it possible to adjust the idle mix screws while the carbs are on the bike or do I have to remove them to make the adjustments?

It's possible, but painful.

Get the little 2-pack of screw drivers from HF that are only about an inch long.  I mark mine with a sharpie so I can keep track of the rotation.  If the bike is warmed up, it will burn you knuckles if you try to adjust them though.

Others have used the Motion-pro tool with mixed results.  I think you need to file (narrow) the bit down some.

This is the Motion Pro 90deg bevel screwdriver. Pricey, but it works well.

Ouch.  I think my option was $2, some knuckle skin, and 3 drops of blood.  Nice tool though.

And regardless of driver, if they haven't been adjusted before, step one is to pull the blanking plugs blocking access to the screws -- not fun on in-situ carbs.
