They make restraining harnesses for dogs. When we traveled with ours he would be in a crate. A cat would probably fit in a large shoe box ( a crate would would work as well for them).

About 7 years now.. We never got another. Our first dog, hopefully not the last, but the type of life we're leading now is not conducive to having another. He was a Standard Schnauzer. Lived to be 16. Loved to sniff women's butts. He was famous for that. Never met a butt he didn't like.
When people that I love or know closely die, within a week or so I can actually hear them say a few words to me while I'm half sleeping. Happened when my mother died last December. When 'Chance' died back in 2005, a few days later I was awoken by a bark. Sounded like him anyway. Then the next day I saw a cloud go by that was the perfect silhouette of his head.
