Warning... more arcane trivia ahead!
I had a 2002 GW and everytime I got up to cruising speed I would reach for another gear (sixth). Then I would remember there was only 5 and was always just slightly annoyed. Problem was if I looked down at the tach I would only be turning reasonably slow revs... Wha.......?
What was happening was our bodies/subconscious report rpm/speed as a function of vibration felt through our feet and hands. The 6 cylinder was fooling me by reporting more firing events per revolution than a 4 or less cylinder.
This sensation will fade if the GW is your only bike but otherwise you'll just have to get used to it.
Very nice bike but I always felt it was driving me, like a car, not the other way around.
