Shinko 777's Anyone?
« on: May 22, 2011, 06:03:53 PM »
Motorcycle Superstore has them for $82, is anyone out there running with these, and if so, can you give a report on your miles, riding type and mileage?
They are called a touring tire, but Shinko doesn't give a lot of detail with any of their tires.
Any input is appreciated.
Ride safe all.

I've been running a Shinko 777 on my 02.  I think I've got close to 12K on it now and it's still got a little more life left.  I got mine from Motorcycle Superstore when they had them on sale for around $75.  I just bought another one as a replacement a few weeks ago at the current price.  I've been very pleased with the tire.  Most of my riding has been slab and most recently just around town.  I've had it on the twisties and never had a problem with it and it has always handled well in the rain as well.  No complaints here at all.  I've been running it with a Dunlop Roadsmart up front.

Greg,
Too bad you didn't ask me about them at the campfire the other nite... Yup, ran one before the Azaro that's on there now.  Equal performance to the Pirelli Sport demon(bias-ply also)...  IIRC, they managed right around 10k before hittin' the wear bars..  A LOT better wet performance than the ME880 too.....  I would buy another one....

TY Dean,
It just never crossed my mind until I got home Fri evening and got to looking at my Pilot GT's. They are in their 17,000th mile and showing some center wear. I don't think I can trust them on a rain soaked road anymore. Thanks again for the info and the invite to the Misfit ride. Hope everyone got home safe and sound.  take care and be safe.
Ride safe all also.

Well I bought my rear 777 in October of 09, replaced it this month when I replaced my engine, close to 12,000 on them.  I would have left them on longer but I had some uneven wear on the center tread.
...and a good time was had by all.

I just mounted my new Shinko 777 rear this evening.  The old one it replaced had just over 13K on it.  It was down into the wear bars but it still had a little tread left and was wearing pretty evenly despite being a  little squared off/flat in the middle due to mostly highway miles.  I never had any problems with the old one and I don't recall it not giving me good traction at any point.  It's amazing how nice a brand new tire makes a bike feel though.  I may go ahead and mount the new front Dunlop Roadsmart just because!  The current one went on when the first Shinko went on the rear.  It's starting to cup a little but still has decent tread.

Just ordered a set from chaparral-racing.com on Tuesday night.  They're still showing them in stock for $99.88.  Might have to buy something else to qualify for free shipping.  ($100)

http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Product/shinko-se890-journey-touring-radial-front-tire/369-874660.aspx

EDIT:  I placed an online order with them on the 4th, and apparently, I found out after calling them to check on my order, that they were having some website trouble and the order never went through.  So it might be worth placing your order by phone. (have the part number ready from their website for whatever you order)

Snarf,

The closest you'll be able to get in a 777 is the 120/90-18...matter of fact...it's the only 18" front 777 they make right now...

I have a set of the Shinko SR733/SR734 in GL1500 sizes ready to mount on my bike right now...don't know about mileage...but, I'm gonna give 'em a try...

Ummm...which bike you gonna put them on?

Going to need new shoeson my 02 for the rally. I have a new GT rear, I thought they had the
777, looks like its going to be the Journey. I just don't want a front with a center groove.

Be sure to post your thoughts on the Journey front after you get it, if you do get it.  Ive been debating on the Journey set myself....
Ill be needing new tires soon on my 95.  Trying to put it off until the end of Summer, but might not be able to.
Say what?

Oops, correction time, I got the Journey 890 tires in Wing sizes.

I currently have a 777 rear on my bike, which I like a lot, except that I had gotten used to the increased ground clearance of the Wing size tires.  I'm happy that the 890 is now available, as I'm wearing out the front edges of my boots too quickly.

Well CR@P!!!  I just called Chaparral to check on my tire.  It (Shinko Journey) is back-ordered.  1week to a month.  I can live with the week; one month not so much.  It pisses me off, they should call or email you to inform you that its backordered.
Well now what? Dunlop E3?  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Has anyone ever ran stock size front with wing sized rear?  I would presume you have slight downward slope, but any horrific side affects?

If you are wanting radials here is what I am using on my '87:

160/80R 16 SE890 JOURNEY TOURING RADIAL SHINKO REAR TIRE (from Chaparral)

and this on the front:

Michelin Pilot Road 2 110/80-18 RADIAL

So far, so good.  I do not notice the rear height difference (I did with the Pilot GT).  I have used them at the advanced cornering clinic and pushed them VERY hard and they have had no issues at all.  No chicken strips!  The bump of the shaft-drive is what gets me in the hair-pin turn.

I am also using on my other connie (in the same sizes):

Avon AM26 Roadrider Motorcycle Tire BIAS (front)
Avon AM42 Venom BIA (rear)

I like them, your mileage may vary.

Damn.  I just ordered an 890 Journey last week from Chapparal.  It arrived today.  The matching front is due to arrive tomorrow.

I'm currently running a Wing size front and stock size rear with no ill effects, other than my toes scraping a bit more than with Wing tires all around.  Shinko Tourmaster in front, 777 on the rear.
