HID kit from DDM Tuning
« on: May 09, 2012, 12:35:54 PM »
This kit seems too cheap to be true.  Has anyone had any experience with this company?  I couldn't find any reference to it using search.  $40 for the base kit and $70 with upgrades.

Several ST1300 owners run them... so far they are very happy with them.

I'm using a DDM 35W 4300k kit for the H11 low beams on my car.  I paid $55 shipped for the kit.  Plug and play install.  They've been working perfectly since I got them back in December.  They take a little longer to fully warm up and get going compared to cars I've had with OEM HID lights in the past.  The consensus on the DDM kits is that they can be a little hit and miss on quality.  It's not uncommon to have a ballast go out but it's not uncommon for them to be totally reliable either.

Base kit price is not relevant unless you want to lose either your high or low beams :)
I think you would need H4 hi/low, which adds $20.  And they don't indicate if it is the nice HID/HID or crappy HID/Xenon with that configuration.

Here is what they were getting for $90 for the ST's...  they have a lifetime warranty, HID/HID.  This was back in 12/2011.

"Our warranty covers the whole kit. We replace bulbs as a pair to make sure they stay a matched pair if one goes out. Most of our kits ship direct from our warehouse in China but if there is a warranty issue we are based in San Diego, CA and process returns / exchange / warranty items from CA.

The full kit comes with 2 bulbs, 2 ballasts, and a wiring harness that will connect the OEM wiring to the ballasts through a fused relay. This harness also controls the movement of the H/L bulbs."

DDMHPH4HL-4500K DDM HID Kit Slim Ballast (35W or 55W)
Options: Wattage : 55 Watt (+$10.00)
Bulb Type : H4 Hi/Lo (+$20.00)
Bulb Color : 4500K

$79.95 (Not Taxable) 1 $79.95

Subtotal Amount : $79.95

Discount : $0.00

Shipping (UPS - Ground) : $13.08

Tax Amount : $0.00

Total Amount : $93.03

I have DMM Tuning HIDs and they are fine, about the same quality as the other genuine Chinese HID retrofits. In fact, I believe all of these HIDs retrofits come from the same factory and production lines no matter what 'firework' brand is printed on the outside of the box.

$70 sounds about right- just get the bi-xenon H4's and make sure you get a harness if this in a new HID install. As someone already mentioned, do NOT get the ones with the piggyback halogen lamp strapped on as the high beam, if they even offer those anymore. Also, I would suggest getting one extra ballast and one extra lamp (they may call it a burner) so that you have a spare. I usually carry a spare halogen (stock type) lamp with me so I can replace one on the side of the road but having a pair of HIDs is nice.

With the Concours, I don't see that as being a real need like it used to be on other bikes.  Ours is one of the few with dual low beam and dual high beam.  If one lamp/ballast blows, you still have another light that still works- giving you just as much light (maybe not the full pattern though) as a "conventional" bike.  No?

I meant to tell you that the 55 watt bulbs supposedly generate alot of heat and one of the fellows that I work with had problems with discoloration of the lens caused by the additional heat of these bulbs.

You will find that the 35 watt bulbs are significantly brighter than the stock bulbs and you will have the added benefit of extra amperage (approx. 3 amps) that can be used for other acces. such as heated clothing etc.  These bulbs are constant current meaning that in the low vs. high beam mode there is no significant change in current draw as you activate an electro magnet that moves the metal shroud to go between the hi/lo mode, the magnets use very little current.  The bulbs do draw more current when cold but after abt 15 seconds they are down to abt 3.2 amps per bulb.

Excellant response folks!   :hail:

Thanks for the feedback and I now have a direction.  If I find an extra ~$80 bucks laying around I will make the move.
