Key blanks?`
« on: May 07, 2012, 01:35:46 PM »
I wanted to make two key nubs that i could leave in my pannier locks so I don't have to keep pulling my FOB out of my pocket.  And so she can work in her pannier the same time I am working on my side. ...

But none of the Key places seem to know what blank to use....   Did you guys have this problem?

I had a local deal order some for a backup key fob I had coded.  There's an A and a B blank from Kawi and the dealer wasn't sure which one we should use, so they ordered both.  Some other knowledgeable chap may reply before I can get home and check out the product numbers, but if not, I'll figure out which one is right and post it here.

You can get em from a dealer but they'll want $15 or so. Take your key into a locksmith, don't just call, they'll be able to fix you up.

Forgot to mention they cost me $33 for the pair through the dealer.

You want either a Silca KW14R or a Silca KW15L. I got mine from a local locksmith for $3.00 each. Bring a saddle bag with you just in case...

I had keys made at Ace too, $1.99 each. The guy had to pull out the box of Kawasaki keys from under the bench. If this helps my key is ilco brand and has x258 on it. I did have to go to two different places as the first place wasn't much help. Might need to try more than one.

From the Connie forum: http://forum.cog-online.org/index.php/topic,27750.msg155602.html#new

Keys

Key Blank - ILCO KW14R  Note: Double check your keys and this information. There seems to be two types of keys, beginning with either an "A" or "B". If you have an "A" key it should be a "KW14R" key-blank.  If you have a "B"  key, it should be an "KW14" key-blank. This was true on the 2008. But I'm not sure how they may be on newer models (so double check).

Another key blank is an ilco X254. I used this on my 08. I do not remember if I had an A or B key.

I did see the guy advertising them.  Last ditch it will work.  Figured someone HAS to have this key local.  Kawasaki didn't reinvent the key here did they? i

I'll try ACE tomorrow
