JC Whitney / Sears Trunk Revisited
« on: April 02, 2012, 11:17:32 AM »
A while back, a bunch of us opted for the JCW/Sears trunk because it was fairly inexpensive.  It has worked fairly well for me, but has had a few issues.  The lid retaining straps broke, so I replaced them with leather shoelaces, with good results.

The locking mechanism had started being a bit sloppy, but I didn't really think much about it.  Until it fell off entirely.  It appears that it is only held on by one small machine screw from inside the trunk.  Moral of the story, if your trunk latch starts getting loose, fix it before it falls off. :)
I haven't contacted JCW to see if they sell the latch separately.  If anyone has a spare latch from a damaged trunk, please PM me.

Cheers.

Had good luck with mine, I replaced the thin hood straps with chain used to hang lighting. I also painted the orange stripe that goes around the front of the trunk black, and replaced the reflector with a large tail/brake light. Trunk cost $45 when Sears was selling them out and I have about $20 into the light. I don't keep it on all the time only when traveling or when the wife is riding on the back.

I upgraded to the Shad46, the JCW was starting to rattle quite a bit and I just never liked how it looked.  It does have a place on the KLR though ;D

Mine just rocks. Replaced the straps too, and moved the hold down straps to the top half. Added the top rack for additional junk. Best under $100 farkle yet.
