Your lights are on!
« on: March 10, 2012, 10:39:12 AM »
Haha very funny I said and took another sip of beer.  Just for the hell of it I decided to go outside anyway.  Sure enough, my lights were on!  Not the headlights, but the marker lights and tail light that normally comes on when you turn the bike "on" but it's not running.  Basically, I forgot to turn the bike back off after I needed to turn in back on JUST SO I COULD ACCESS THE FRONT COMPARTMENT.

It was that way for at least two hours.  Voltage dipped to 13.0.  I wasn't leaving for a while but I decided to start it anyway just to make sure it would, in case I had to scramble for a jump.  It did, sounded a little weak.

Yeah I read about the mod to work around this in the C14 mod forum.  Might just do it.

I went to a hypnotist...   He had me visualize sitting on the bike, parking it, taking my gear off...   Now he said, in your minds eye... As you walk away from the bike, turn and look at it..  Did you remember to turn off the key??    Hasn't happened again...

One can't forget to "turn off the key" on the Concours, because that is the proper way to stop the bike from running- you turn off the ignition.... otherwise it would still be running!  When you walk away from it (with your fob) it is "locked".

I *have* had to turn the ignition back on to get something out of the glovebox, but the moment I open it, I turn off the ignition again.  I think I am too OCD to ever forget to do something like that :)

I forgot because the bike wasn't running at the time, I just needed to turn in on again to stow my sunglasses.  Foresight would have simply had me push the button before turning the key off.  Or, a standard key lockable glove box would have prevented the whole thing in the first place.

Precisely why I got into the habit of turning off my bikes with the key, not the cut off switch. But with KIPASS I now have gotten into the habit of turning off the bike with the key and walking away. Can't tell ya how many times I have come back to my Suzuki DR650 only to find the key in the ignition where I left it. In fact a couple of times, I've put all my stuff on including gloves, gotten on the DR, remembered I needed the key, took my glove off, rummaged around in my pocket only to then realize the key is actually in the ignition. Talk about senior moment.

I was trained that the handlebar "kill" switch is an emergency cut-off switch.  I have never used it on any bike (since I have never had an emergency need to cut off the bike).

Interesting. The MOST class I took in 2004 wanted us to use that switch to turn off the bike. Like you, I have never used it since.

Oh, I should say that once I hit that switch while I was washing the bike and was very upset that my bike was dead and would no long start.....  took a long while to remember to check the emergency kill switch!

I tend to use the kill switch most of the time. I use it enough that it's become second nature. Handy if you need it.

I use the kill switch when getting gas, otherwise I have to turn my radar detector back on when I start the bike back up, I'm just lazy I guess...

That is interesting.  However, I assume if you use the kill switch, all the lights (including both headlights) will remain "on" the entire time, sucking lots of battery.  Maybe it won't normally matter, but I worry about such things :)

Oh Max, I worry about you bro... How long does it take you to pump gas? Do you really think 2 minutes with your lights on will cost you battery life??

If I told you have I never consumed alcohol before, you would probably think I was even more hopeless... so I won't tell you ;)

I do tend to worry a lot.  Throw in over-analyzing and some OCD, and you got me pegged!
