California Scientific Large Windshield
« on: March 30, 2012, 05:40:34 PM »
I ordered a large CalSci for my 2012 C14 Monday at lunchtime, it was shipped that very afternoon, and it arrived at my doorstep Friday at lunchtime. The windshield was packaged very nicely. So first off, CalSci gets my top rating for order processing.

The install was a breeze; it probably took less than 5 minutes.

I'm about 5'8" with a 30-32 inch inseam. With the windshield fully down, it seemed about the same height at the stock windshield fully up, with my line of sight several inches above the top of the screen. With it fully up, my line of sight is through the top couple of inches of the screen. This is exactly how I wanted it. I like to be able to have it well below my line of sight or be able to raise it above my line of sight.

The stock windshield was pretty much awful for me.  Lots of turbulence and noise no matter what position I had it in, and it was pretty much unbearable at the 80-90 mph speeds at which I like to cruise. That's with my RF1100, but I also tried my wife's Scorpion Exo700 and it was the same. An hour at speed was about all I could take.

Now, with the CalSci fully down, I'd estimate I get about 70% less turbulence and about 50% less noise at any speed. With it fully up, there's almost no turbulence and very little noise at speeds up to 90 (haven't had a chance to get in the triple digits yet). I also have to get my wife on the back and have her tell what it's like back there. I'll update this when I get a chance to do that.

In summary, I'm extremely pleased with this shield. Top notch quality and highly effective.

PS: Whether you're in the market for a new shield or not, you really should check out the CalSci site. It has tons of great info related to motorcycles and motorcycling.

And your stock screen is taller than the one that came on my 09. That was one of the first things I changed.
I have a Cee Bailey Ultra Tour Domed and get the same results as your Cal Sci, Most of the time I ride with it down.

What an interesting post....I just received a windshield from them today myself.  I bought the low/tinted windshield.  I just opened it up and put it on about 45 minutes ago.  You are right about the packaging.  It came wrapped in a nice soft cloth pouch, and included a bottle of cleaner and micro fiber towel.  I have not ridden it yet, but it's actually very similar in size to the 08-09 stock windshield that I have had on the bike.

Same here. I have a corbin seat which is 1" lower than stock. At full up I look through the sheild and all is nice and quite. I keep the stock '09 sheild on hand for summer because it flows a lot more air, but it sure is noisy.

I've also got the Cal-Sci Large with Corbin seats, and my wife loves the set-up. She can tell when I adjust the screen by the amount of noise that she gets.

sounds like I made the wrong choice in windshield. I got the VStream, because the price was right (135 and free shipping). It's a great looking shield but I'm a little too tall for it and I still get a lot of wind noise. I have to hunch down to get things as quiet as I expected it to be when I ordered it. I wear earplugs so it's bearable, but it would have been nice if the shield were another 2" taller.

I will catch so much grief if I order the CalSci!

There is something about this bike that makes things noisier. I was riding my wife's Vulcan which has a short shield (it's about as high as the stock Connie shield in the top position), with my RF1100, and it was relatively quiet compared to the Connie.

I don't know what's in the bottle of cleaner that CalSci sends out along with a shield purchase, but it works great!

Park the bikes side-by-side & notice the angle of the windscreens. Kinda like comparing truck & car windsheilds. One is almost perpendicular & the other is quite angled.

I'm 6'1" w/34" inseam. I got a used CS lg from a member. It's quiet when full up, but I get a lot of back pressure at that setting. I don't want to go any larger and the noise at the lower settings don't bother me as I wear ear plugs. Not sure if I'll keep it or not. Either way, it's better than the stock shield.

Agreed, and Cal Sci is nice enough to put the formula on their website - http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Fairing.html#Cleaning

Cleaning your Windshield

We make our own cleaning fluid. When you buy a windshield from us, we give you a small spray bottle of cleaning fluid and a micro-fiber cleaning towel. Here's our "secret" washing fluid recipe, the result of testing about 25 different formulas:

Makes 1 quart = 1 liter windshield washing fluid

1/2 cup = 100ml ammonia (double this if you have a lot of bugs)
    2 cups = 400ml isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol
1.5 tsp = 8ml car wash detergent (don't substitute dish soap or laundry detergent)
    2 cups = 500ml water

My wife is terrified of motorcycles, she looks like a cat that knows it is about to get a bath, when she is on a bike. She has gone on maybe 5 short rides with me in the 20 years we've been married (and I was a lot less gassy then, weren't we all?).
