HJC Symax 3 Modifications?
« on: March 20, 2012, 06:09:04 AM »
Well, I've had this Symax 3 helmet on the road for about 1,500 miles this year and I don't think I can use it anymore.  I've run into two large hurdles.  The first is that it aggravates my forehead.  They use a perforated padding instead of a smooth padding that doesn't move at all which causes it to grip and rub which ends up feeling like a sunburn after 30 minutes.  The other is the extremely narrow field of vision.  Compared to my HJC AC-12, its considerably smaller.  I can no longer see the gauges without moving my head and have reduced side vision.

Has anyone modified the inside of a helmet with a Dremel?  I'm thinking if I remove some of that foam padding with a sanding bit, it might reduce the pressure and make it work.  Nothing can be done for the field of vision problem.

They don't have a direct link to the exact helmet but you can use the nav on the side of their page.

I was actually considering buying symax3.  I know now what to look for. Thanks.

Ps, I don't tink it's a good idea modifying a helmet!  This is your head we are talking about.

That's right, modify your head instead.    ;)

I have a symax2 and I really like it.

What lid were you using before the symax3?

HJC AC-12 Carbon Elbowz.  Loved it but I really wanted something I could flip-up.  I couldn't find a dealership within a couple hundred miles that carried this particular helmet.  I head fits well in HJC helmets.  They do say that some brands cater to particular head types.

Any chance that you could compress the area of the helmet that bothers your head a bit?

I'm going to take the liner out tonight and investigate the situation a bit further.  There must be a solution besides getting a new helmet, but in the end, I need my head more than the helmet.

Messing with the helmet is not a good thing.  You might have to write your lost on this one.  I have been using the Symax2 and love it.  Thinking about upgrading.  If you the Symax3 doesn't work for you at the end.  I will PM you to send it to me....thanks.  :o

I have made small modifications to just about every helmet I have ever owned. From sculpting/removing padding from the cheek to using a dremel to sand down/remove foam material from the brow area and/or improve air flow. I've yet to find a single helmet that hasn't needed some slight modifications to make it comfortable or better.

My list includes:
HJC (3)
Shoei (2)
Bell
Scorpion (2)
Icon

After removing foam from the helmet, you can use a black marker to make it look normal again.

Subtle modifications shouldn't effect the structural integrity.
