any way to boost the sound on headsets?
« on: February 04, 2012, 05:24:29 PM »
I have my sena headset but the sound is'nt enough for me. It was'nt as bad when installed in my old shoei xsp2 but the new quest helmet has more noise in it than my old helmet. Anyway to boost output on these things?

If the problem is the volume of MP3 music or audiobook files, you can change the gain of these files with a free program called MP3Gain.  Also, I use earphones instead of helmet speakers, which has the dual advantage of protect my hearing from wind noise and doing a better job of transmitting sounds into my ears so that lower volumes can be heard well (I use a Chatterbox xBI, not Sena, but the principle is the same).

I use Sennheiser MM200s Bluetooth headphones and love the sound. I tried the Sony version, and the Sennheisers are twice as powerful. I don't think they are making them anymore, but can still find them online. If they are an authorized dealer, they come with a 2 year warranty.

Buy a slower bike!
 ;)
I noticed small changes in the positioning of the speakers made a huge difference.

I recommend earphones.  If you are using speakers, jacking up the volume even more combined with wind noise can potentially cause hearing damage, especially over long durations.  I bought some cheap ones from Target and they worked surprisingly well:

They block LOTS of noise, sound pretty darn good, are tiny and comfortable, stay in my ears (even when putting on the helmet) and have an ultra-thin cable.  After a few months of using them, I went and bought a few more pair, to use with my portable mp3 player and as a spare.

I bought a Boost-a-roo on Ebay and it made a big difference in headphone volume for me.

If the music is coming in through bluetooth there probably isn't any way to boost the volume.  If it is hardwire, then run through an amp, I use a mixit2.

With your helmet on, use your finger to make sure the speaker is next to your ear opening and not above or behind or below.  Being right at the ear opening will really make a big difference in the volume.

It is bluetooth but I have a different player I have'nt used so I'm gonna try it. These quest helmets also have a large opening by the ears. Trying to cut a set of foam inserts out of an extra set of cheekpads to get them closer to my ears. May just be design of helmet as I did'nt have as much of a problem with the old helmet, thanks for info

+1 on MP3Gain. I have no problems with the volume of the phone, it is usually too loud, and I wear earplugs and use the speakers that came with the Senas. Music streamed from the phone is good, but I usually use a Sony MP3 player. Unfortunately the Sony is a new model and they have conformed to the EU's new rules regarding the maximum output of MP3players, so it doesn't output as high of a level as my old one. I'm okay with the music since I don't want it blaring anyway, but audiobooks were a bit weak so I boost them with MP3Gain.
