Damage to the common peroneal nerve from riding?
« on: December 02, 2011, 04:37:24 PM »
I am having surgery on my right leg on Monday to repair my common peroneal nerve (drop foot).  My Dr. said that they do this surgery for a lot of guys that ride motorcycles.  Anyone here have an experience with this?  I thought it was kind of weird how it just appeared out of nowhere.  I noticed my right foot was dragging after a 300 mile day of twisty carving and it has been like that ever since (about six weeks).  He said that if they didn't take care of it ASAP that there was a possibility that I could have this problem permanantly.

You think this may have had something to do with the 'incident'?

This actually started on the Thursday before the "incident".

He wasn't blaming me, he just said that in all of the cases that he has had a patient with a peroneal repair, they had some sort of trauma like a broken ankle or leg.  Since mine came out of nowhere he told me that the orthopeadic surgeon thought that it could be due to excessive vibrations on a bike.  I was doubtful but thought I would see if any of you guys here and ever dealt with anything like this.

Sounds like a stretch to me. Every HD rider in the country would be walking with a limp.

 ;)

That is probably the kind of bike that the ortho surgeon rides.   ;D

Boy, who knew the connie buzz was lethal?

When training for the triathlon, the trainer/mentor guy told me to make sure and stand up in the pedals every 15 minutes to get circulation to certain places so this wouldn't happen.  I use this on the bike (the non-human powered one) now as well.  I don't know how effective it is, but I still do it.

Just thinking out loud here, typing really.

Everyone's nerves run in a general location but not exactly where an anatomy book says they should be.  It could be that your wiring or anyone else's wiring could be positioned off a little compounded by the motorcycle riding.  It sounds strange I'm sure.  I know that I have CPS pretty bad in both my hands.  While doing NCTs and the like the doctors found that the nerves coming from my neck, down my arms are not positioned where they should be, compounding the problem.  It turns out that, while doing normal stuff, like sleeping, raising my arms up over my head etc. has been increasing the speed of the nerve damage.

So, after all that, I would imagine that some people are more predisposed to a condition such as drop foot from riding a motorcycle and others aren't.  Once again, just typing in cyberspace...

What he said, IMHO. I've been riding street and dirt for 40+ years, no problems with this. If anybody would have it would be me.

People differ greatly in how they're put together and what affects one person won't even be noticeable by someone else. I think your doctor is waaaayyyyy over-generalizing with regards to the "source" of the problem or that it's some kind of common m/c-related condition. That sounds like BS to me.
