Fork Braces
« on: October 11, 2011, 09:50:22 AM »
I was reading a post here concerning fork braces. On long corners it seems I have to correct the steering quite a bit. Kind of like it gets offtrack. I am not sure if it is me or the bike. I had the same issue with my 86 (01 now) but that did improve some with Avon storm.

Is this something where a fork brace would help? I am satisfied with the ride and I seldom have an opportunity to ride in any twisties but do have a lot of long 80/90 mph corners.

You are going to see a lot more fork flex from your 86 than from the 01.  The forks on the early model bikes were not nearly as rigid as the later models.
I forkbrace may help you in this situation.  I installed one on my 02 and it helps tremendously in grooved roads and dirty air.  In my opinion a  good set of tires will do more to correct this issue.  A few things to check; do you have any cupping, low air pressure in tire, and how is your pre-load set on your forks?

IMO you will get far more for your money, with a good set of fork springs from Racetech or Sonic along with Racetech Cartridge Emulators. I've ridden a lot of miles with and without a fork brace. I've found that I don't miss it one bit when I run without it. If I ride a Concours without good springs and emulators, I miss them immediately.

Ah, thank you.

Emulators and springs were among the first mods I made to the bike (after that cursed windshield), and I noticed a great improvement in comfort and road-holding over rougher patches in turns.

A fork brace is high on the list of things I've managed to do without. And it prevents you from installing gaiters.

But the brace is so much easier to install :o  The 01 is the bike a I am referring to. It came with new progressive springs. Not sure what the preload is but the tires are new and properly inflated.

actually it really is not a problem installing gaitors. I kept the fork brace just a tad on the low side, allowing the gaitors to cover the fork housing an 1/8th of an inch or so, dab a little contact cement there and they have not budged.

It never hurts to seek more info IMO.  I have read the FAQ a few times, first thing I did. There is a great deal of great info there. But if it was the do all/end all what would we discuss then? I enjoy coming here and reading discussions about the bike I love to ride.

(1) Absolutely.....

(2) This is why I can be found here at all hours of the day & night; only time that you will never see me here is 00:01 to 06:00 EST

As to fork braces I think that they will help to some degree any bike that one can be fitted. When I installed one on my bike it was many for the beefy appearance that it lent to the front end. Much to my pleasure I could feel the improvement that it offered on the road ASAP as the bike was no longer getting unstable if I hit one of MI's many potholes or exp cracks while healed over in the turns. I used the brace offered by Craig Nedrow of Bay Machine Works due to it's smooth rounded near stock looking shape. Today I run a similar looking but polished brace on my ZRX front end; heck I even bought a spare.
