My 2001 Ford Ranger XLT 4WD
« on: October 09, 2011, 04:18:08 PM »
Bought the vehicle off a lease about 2005. Last month I had to get a battery for it. That was the first time it has been in the repair shop. All kinds of unusual electrical things happen when the battery goes bad. About 3 years ago I did have to get 2 new tires cause one got an unrepairable leak. This happened probably on the trip when I picked up my C10. I don't put a lot of miles on the truck. It has 45,000 miles. The only thing I have done is change the oil yearly and put an air filter in.  I now pay $400 a year for insurance. So except for the depreciation I have suffered this has been an inexpensive vehicle to have.

I am scheduled to have some stuff done at the shop tomorrow. Will have the cooling system flushed, new hoses, a thermostat, fan belt, and a new feul filter put on. They are going to put in the last 5 quarts of my free synthetic oil too. The oil was free cause I got a bunch of it at O'Rileys when they had a total mail in rebate.  Any body think of any thing that I should have done while this maintenance is being done.

Got most of my parts from rock auto for 60 bucks. did get a 15 dollar fuel filter from carquest, there brand is said to be made by wix. It is made in Taiwan though.

This is the first truck I have ever had.

Service the tranfer case and rear end and check cv joints in front axles.

In my opinion though, if the rear end did not get dipped in water for prolonged periods, I would not worry about it. Why fix something that is not broke. I got two 4X4 vehicle - a truck and a jeep. Jeep got about 120k miles and truck about 80k miles. No transfer case or rear end service and they both running top notch. I did have them put a bit of friction modified on my truck rear end one time to reduce the limited slip clutches to catch during corners.
Fuel filter and thermostat sounds good. But on a 2005 truck, I do not think the hoses would be bad unless you see cracking, etc. Appears you already got the parts and scheduled service - so it is a moot point. Just thought you could have saved some dough.

You change gear lube on your bike(s) regularly, no? Four wheeled vehicles need the same care.

Just got back from the shop. They charged 210 dollars for three hours labor. They did not think there was anything else that needed to be done at this time. supposedly the brakes were fine.

My service guy said it is not unusual for modern 10 year old cars to not have had anything go wrong with them. I can remember when cars did not regularly last 10 years.
