Protection for top of the side cases?
« on: August 29, 2011, 06:37:12 PM »
Has anyone tried putting tank gripper material on the very top part of the painted area on the side cases?  I would like to be able to pack extra gear across the cases and back seat for longer trips without scuffing up the paint.  I know there are clear protector kits available but I hear they also scuff over time.  Also would not have to worry as much everytime the better half gets on and off the bike.

I had the 3M film from http://www.thetankslapper.biz/index.html on the saddlebags and tank of one of my ST1100s.

It worked great and never showed any wear even where my Aerostich rubbed at the rear and sides of the gas tank.  It also kept me from a couple of boot scuffs on the top of the saddlebags.

I had the tank slapper clear film kit on my tank and side cases. I then bought the tech spec kit and ended up cutting up the larger pieces of the tank slapper film and put that on the tops of my bags. Seems to work ok.

My experience with scuffs is that they are somewhat easy to remove from the paint but I have had a really difficult time removing them from the protectors....so I gave up.

You really don't know me, do you?  If I tried to do something like that, I would not only fall off the bike on the right side but most likey tip it over in the process.... ;)

Sadly, yes.

That must put a damper on all your smiting.   ;)

Walk up to take someone's head off and you trip in the process.  Do you continue with the beheading, or do you pick yourself up, turn and around and just call it a day at that point?

Mount it just like any other thoroughbred. Put your foot in the left stirrup, grab on with both hands, and throw your leg up high over the saddle. (Got to be on the side or center stand to do this.)

Nope...I continue with the beheading... >:( ;)   The show must go on.  When you've paid for the caterers and bleachers and such it's best not to let the audience down.

I'd pay a dollar to see that.

You may possibly see it for free next summer...

That's right, otherwise instead of the beheadee you may yourself become the beheaded.

Thanks for all the responses.  Just to be clear, it is not me that I have to worry about.  It's the wife (though she is getting better about it) and like I said in the original post I would like to be able to secure gear across the back seat and over the top of the side cases for longer trips.
Thanks again

Mike, my wofe does her best to turn my bags into a hate-crime zone every time she gets on the bike.  I used some clear film meant for sirt bike numberplates and it is very good.
