Clutch Spring Stud Torque ??
« on: August 27, 2011, 04:04:12 PM »
I am replacing the inner clutch hub and can't seem to find the torque setting for the six clutch spring studs that screw into the inner hub.

Each clutch spring sits over a stud and the spring is held in place by a bolt that screws into the end of the stud.
The listed torque for the clutch spring bolt is 95 in-lbs, but there does not appear to be any value for the actual stud.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What size is the base thread; is it the same or larger than the spring captive bolt? If the same then use the same torque plus thread locker as the listed torque is already higher than the "general" torque spec as listed in the front of the service manual. If larger then use the listed "general" torque for that size thread or the same as above which ever is higher plus thread locker.

I don't beleive I have ever seen a torque spec on the studs, just as with any stud on a bike.
This should tell you to apply thread locker sealant to the stud, and install it snugly, but do not over torque it. The stud binds tight when the thread bottoms out, over toquing may cause the surrounding boss to crack. The torque induced on the stud's body linearly when the bolthead is drawn up on it with the springs in position should be followed though.

Thank you TCro & M.O.B for your advice.

The section of the inner hub that the stud screws into is approx. 9mm thick steel so I don't think it would crack under the torque involved (97 in-lbs).  My main concern was the stud shearing off.

The threaded section of the stud and the spring bolt are the same diameter (6mm), so I think I'll use some thread locker on the stud and the same torque on both the stud and bolt.

Thanks again.

<edit 31 Aug '11>  The hub swap went well without any drama.  Even though I used a torque wrench for tightening the studs, I could feel that the 97 in-lbs was not too much.  Thanks again for the advice.
