tank bag/ comfort
« on: August 14, 2011, 08:28:37 PM »
This may sound strange, but on my previous st bikes i would lean on my tankbag with my left arm on long rides to rest.  The c14 i sit more on top of than in.  Does anyone else do this, or have a tall expandable tankbag they would suggest.
thanks

On Friday I spent half my ride (about 6 hrs) with my left arm on the tank bag.  I do it all the time.  I find it helps me on those long straight stretches.  Its a Chase Harper expanding magnetic tank bag.  Sorry, I don't know which model.  I hate tags and cut em off as soon as I get the item home.

I would suggest Bags Connection quick lock Trial QL.

Yep, it's how I rode most of the time before putting on a set of Phil's Wedges.  I have a large Chase Harper expandable too, but it's a strap on, not magnetic.  Also don't know the model anymore, but it's this one:

Yeah, mine's a bit bigger than that, but close.  Although, I don't care for strap ons.........

I do the same and mine is the 600 model.  Sometimes I even wonder if I could just lean over and rest on it on some of the superslab runs ;)

I'm not sold on the magnetic bags yet.  I keep thinking an iron filing will stick to the bottom of the magnet, then scratch up the tank.

I've done that, just lay forward on the bag and rest.  The hard part is getting the chin bar on my helmet to a position that I can still see OK without it being too uncomfortable or just plain hard on the neck.  It also takes a little getting used to controlling the steering from that angle too.

I wouldn't recommend it if there's any traffic around though.  When I was doing it, I was running across some pretty deserted stretches of Wyoming. Southern Idaho, and Eastern Oregon.

I used to worry about that as well.  But on the Connie and my previous bike I have never gotten so much as a smudge from the magnetic tank bag.  Just check that the tank and the bottom of the bag are free from any debris beforehand though.

Have actually placed a small micro-fiber cloth below the magnet base. Protects the tank and the magnet is still secured to the tank. Just be careful where you set the magnet base when you're at the gas station. That's where you pick up those metal shavings.

I have a Joe Rocket Manta XL and rest on it also. It is a magnet bag and I pull it off all the time and no scratches. It isn't as big as the others but holds my rain gear, gun, phone and mp3 player just fine.

I have a  Chase Harper 880 0r 800 model.  Makes a nice rest for the long trips.  It's a strap on and the two points on the front of my 2010 and a quick release strap from under the seat is easy to use.

I do rest my left arm on the tank or tankbag all the time, and since I got the GoCruise I sometimes even do it with the right arm, but road conditions have to be really good for me to take the hand away from the brake.

You can also put some of the clear vinyl / plastic sheet cut to fit on the tank.  It stays put much like a tank slapper with a little heat gun and flattening, protecting tank from possible foreign debris as well as the normal dulling of contact points over time.  Its about $2 for 2 yards of the stuff.

I agree, I love my Trial QL and I recommend it and the electric ring. Especially for '10 and '11
models that don't have to do anything special to clear the glovebox.

I've also leaned on it with my hand supporting the front of my helmet when my neck muscles
where starting to complain.
