GoPro camera mounting ?
« on: June 08, 2011, 11:46:39 AM »
I recently purchased a GoPro camera for my C14.  I'm trying to figure out where to mount the GoPro.

I have a 'lipstick' cam (Helmet Cam) on my Wing mounted under the front faring.  I like this mounting (Velcro) because it shows a bit of the front tire and suspension moving as I ride.  But, the GoPro seems like it would be difficult to do this.  I haven't unpacked the GoPro, but don't think it has a remote, so mounting it any distance from the 'cabin' would not work.

Anyone have one of these mounted to their C14?

I have the Contour HD GPS, I mounted it under the headlight and under the rear tail. I posted some vids on the site if you search for them.

Otherwise happy to take a photo of the mounting if you want in a few days.

That'd be nice.  And, how do you turn the GoPro on from those areas?  Remote of some sort?  How do you aim the GoPro?

No remote, just get of my bike and turn it on/off.

I found a photo from the track day where you can see the camera mounted just on the riders right hand side under the headlight. There is a fairing screw in that location which I used for a tether.

I have seen a C14 with a GoPro mounted to the left fairing just under the turn signal.  The view of the front wheel is pretty cool on other videos that I have seen from that perspective.
Keeping the economy going, one tank of fuel and two tires at a time.

Yes, this is where I mounted my camera, too.  I used the suction cup after thoroughly alcoholing off the faring and the suction cup.  I did tether the unit to the bike with some zip ties (just a temporary deal until I figure out how to teather it for better release).

The shots are really good.  I can see the front wheel/suspension moving as the bike goes down the road.  There is some wind noise, tho.  And, not that much of the motor sound is on my clips.

One down side about this mounting is that you have to stop, get off the bike to fire the GoPro up.  I have tried to have the unit on and then trip the shutter button as I'm riding.  I can do this, but don't feel it's all that "safe".  Having a remote would be nice.  Or, mounting it on the handle bars ... but, then you don't get the nice 'road feeling' from a lower mounting.

Could it be mounted on the handlebars with say, a ram mount?  Anyone tried that?  Just wondering.

Certainly the GoPro can be mounted on the bars, clutch/brake reservoirs, and other places where you can have a good view of the road.  I just like it mounted low to show the action of the front wheel/suspension as I ride curves/twisties.  Plus, lower mounting gives the impression of more speed.  I like that, too.

It is a very cool perspective, but for some reason on my speed triple, all it would get was the sky?  :loco:

well i was playing with my new setup trying different locations to get different views. i did the low right side below the turn signal, on the rear case sticking out, and went to stick it to the nose above the headlight and dropped it, landed right on the lens of the housing, not the camera. fkn great, nice gouges in it  :o guess i need to order the lens kit. oops.
For the video low on the side, the front wheel was interesting, but the video looked very dark compared to others. i suspect the camera was in the shade on the side of the bike and saw a setting for that, center weight or something. On the case i thought it could be cool, but pushed the wrong button and took delayed photos, one of my boot getting off the bike. lol

thinking i could do the flat sticky mount on my brake reservoir going side to side, and have the camera off to the right. would clear everything then, not sure about my hand guards when i put them back on. any feedback on this location??

thanks for the time,
Joel

Sorry I don't have a pic of my GoPro mounted on the bike but the below pics show my old camera on my right handlebar.  I used have it tucked in behind the screen as it wasn't waterproof but now have the GoPro out in the breeze to get a better picture.

My only issue is that it does block my mirror a bit and also catches the reading on the speedo...

Napier-Taihape Part 1

Planning on trying one of the stick on mounts on a pannier to see what sort of view that gets me.  But I want to sort out some sort of tether first...

glad you liked it!  ;D  I have one of me doing the posted speed limit and obeying all traffic laws if you'd like to see that one.
