I have to agree with everything you said MOB. Thank you for that reassurance. Actually, now that I think about it, when I changed the tires at 2400 miles ago, I used Valvoline Crimson HD grease on the splines. I bet that has something to do with the wheel goober. What's the best spline grease?

That's funny, I could see the pics on my tablet at home and now I'm on my phone and I see them. I don't think it matters where images are posted, but I could be wrong. I actually posted them there thinking this thread was there. Then I came to my (better) senses.

FSM calls for Moly, most people use it, I find it very messy and expensive, and I use the same grease you noted, I just make sure I clean and relube everytime I take the wheel off... which is frequently because this bike eats tires like potato chips...
Been using that crimson for the last 13 years on all my Concours' and never had a wear issue...

Your decisions are all up to you,
I use Castrol dino oil, and change it @ 4-5k intervals, with a new filters..

All in all, every owner needs to build a database, subject to their findings using whatever for a long enough period of time, to find them viable...
I don't make a decision on "group" recomendations, I've been doing motorcycle repair and service for 40+ years, my choices are based on those years, and any findings I had making changes... I've found that using something another person says is gold, was only gold for them, and if they sold off the machine after 3 or 4 years, they could have used olive oil in the machine for that basis...

Now I'm gonna try the Castrol synthetic one time, next week, and I will run it for 8k miles, because it SHOULD be good for that many,
People draining synth oils every 3-4 k are just tossing money away..

Oil threads suck bigtime.

I would much rather have a good oil thread than any of the slow day threads on here, like word association, 'what are you watching' or 'aircraft we like'. Not a true dis' as I have participated, but it's a bad day when you hit unread and that's it.

I'm not sure that's a supportable position scientifically.  In fact there is very little actual difference in the chemistry of petroleum-derived oils and synthetic oils.  The difference is really in how the molecules are created, either by "cracking" heavier petroleum molecules down or building them up from simpler ones.

The original point was switching from dino oil to synthetic or back and either is possible without any adverse effects.  The article below is about mixing, which is not recommended for basically the same reasons you shouldn't mix Valvoline and Penzoil.

Well let's at least try to stay on topic so we don't upset the sissies who don't like oil threads; it's a gear lube thread. I'm using Mobil1 75w-90 synthetic. Goes in clear; comes out dirty. I also have some MasterPro 75w-90 synthetic on the shelf- OReilly house brand.

WOW! That was good oil thread therapy. Look how simple and easy it is to settle the gear lube question.
