HELP!!!! Crankshaft turned w/o timing chain tensioner
« on: August 28, 2016, 02:40:49 PM »
In the process of doing the valve clearance check, the engine got turned over while the timing chain tensioner was out. How bad did I screw up and how can I fix it?

I have not done one myself. Just guessing to give some initial info...

The answer to your question is "it all depends on if the cam jumped timing" when it rotated.
The tensioner is on the slack side of the T Chain, The crankshaft pulls down on the tight side when it rotates.
SO, it's possible that it didn't  hurt anything.

My guess, reinstall the tensioner and check the cam timing.

Ride safe, Ted

Depends.

If the engine turned clockwise, the cardinal grameter won't fit.
If counterclockwise, the right quadrant jump nipple is stripped.

If you used the starter to turn the engine over, all bets are off.

My suggestion is to reinstall the tensioner per "The Book", finish the valve adjust, then go ride. 99.9% certain no harm was done :)

Thanks for the responses. I ended up just pulling the cams and resetting the timing per the FSM. All should be well now. I gat all the clearances checked and all but 4 are out of spec, some by as much as .03mm! The adjustment will happen tomorrow when my helper gets off work. Lots of work still to do.

Just for curiosity, what mileage is that on ? I just checked on 80000 km (49800 miles) and all are well inside tolerance.

Cheers
