Siphon off old gas
« on: June 15, 2016, 06:18:59 PM »
This is with a 2011 - C14

Unfortunately I had a lot of work travel last year, and didn't have a chance to take the bike out at all, so I've got old gas (with stabil in it) but it's basically sat for the past 17 months.

I thought I'd start with siphoning off the old gas, but for some reason my siphon hose isn't reaching the gas - is there a trick to that?

And after that, any recommendations?

thanks, Chuck

It's nearly impossible to get a siphon all the way down to the gas.  I think the best way is to take the tank off and turn it over and dump it into another container.

If your not able to even reach gas with your hose then you can't have much more than 1/3 tank left. I would fill the tank up with fresh gas & ride. I have a 55 gallon drum filled with gas that I keep for my generator. I filled it 3 years ago & gave it a heavy mix of stabil. I just finished running threw this gas in my truck to use it up & refill the drum with new gas. For the last 3 tanks I mixed 50/50 with fresh gas & it runs fine. I ran some of the 3 year old gas in my generator without mixing with fresh gas just to see how it would work & the generator ran fine for the 30 min I ran it.

I pull the tank, and turn it upside down, and dump it into a huge funnel in a 5 gallon can... and totally get everything out.... just my method...

I agree with zarticus- if you can't reach it, then how much is actually in there?  If it were me, I would probably just fill it up with fresh gas and then ride it all out.  17 months is old, but I don't think it is totally insane, especially if diluted 2/3 AND you used Stabil.  I probably just wouldn't gun it on that tank and be careful not to lug.  I regularly use gas that is well over a year old with Stabil in my lawn mower and generator with no issues....

Yup, It's not rocket science. Just fill & get on with the rest of your life unless you "want" to pull the tank. If you do I recommend cleaning or replacing the fuel filter in the tank while it's off.

Put some Injector Clean in the tank. Top it off with new Premium. Take it easy for the first tank, as the octane may be a little down. If you want add some octane boost.
