garmin zumo
« on: June 28, 2011, 07:05:11 PM »
I have a garmin zumo 450,  that use to be hooked to the battery.  But there was lots of noise in the mp3 player.  I talked to garmin and they said to move it away from the battery.  I did and about two months later it died.  I sent it to garmin and exchanged it for another zumo 450.  I took one day long trip and the bike sat for two weeks.  I started the bike to ride to work and the new zumo was dead.  I called garmin and they are going to exchange it again.  Should I hook it back to the battery?  Is the bike making the garmin die or is it I'm having bad luck with the gps???

Are you holding down the top left and bottom right buttons at the same time to  restart?
What do you mean  'move it away'?  You unhooked the  positive lead wire from the battery? or you tied it to a stick and held it as far away   as possible from the motorcycle battery?

Wire it to the battery. Electronic noise is a different issue. A choke (ferrite coil) or  a noise filter like a small capacitor maybe needed. You do have a 'always on lead ' under the left pocket/front of the bike.

If you ran a long wire from the battery to the 450 you probably ran it near the top of the engine near the spark plug coils.  Not good, you will pick up lots of noise.
If you still have fuel in the tank, you are not lost yet

Have my 550 hooked up to the fuse block, switchable. No issues with any noise, all good.. It's been that way since new, 3 years running..

My Garmin product (550) was pure junk.  After going a few rounds with garmin and sending them back and forth I gave it away

First time I heard this. You could have exchanged it free for another one.  Most people don't know how to use them and blame the unit of course I am not saying that is you. One thing I see a lot is the thing will not turn on.  Hold the top left and bottom right buttons down for 8 to 10 seconds and that resets it. The newer software fixed it too.
Most every one I know owns a 550 and they are by far  the best gps   you can buy for a motorcycle except for maybe the 660.
What was wrong with yours?   Can you get it back? I will buy it.
