Projekt D Products
« on: July 02, 2011, 12:37:45 PM »
Anyone know of an online retailer in the States that sells the Project D rear rack and/or helmet locks?  I was going to order directly from them until I saw it would cost me $108 for shipping.  Screw that!  The rack isn't a big issue as there are a couple sources offering them, but I haven't seen anyone else offering a helmet lock kit that mounts to the underside of the rack - just the Helmet Guardian that mounts behind the license plate.

I recommend Phils rack MrF.

As for ProjektD, I've bought farkles from them twice, 100% satisfied both times with $, shipping time, and quality.

Well, what appealed to me with the Projekt D rack was that it was flat and solid which would let me mill my own slots in where I wanted them.  All the other racks I've seen are like the stock one in that they have long slots that run front to rear.  I want a row of 1.5" long slots from the front to the rear of the rack on either side so I can lace my straps through them to better secure my load.  Hard to explain so I've attached a rough mock-up.  Might give Phil a call and see if I can get one of his before he mills in the long slots and ribs as that would let me do what I want as well.

Wait, you can mill some slots on your own? If so, why not make your own replacement rack?

Well, sweet talking my friend with the machine shop into milling a few slots would be a lot easier than getting him to write a program for the CNC to get the angles of the sides and the mounting hole placement correct.  Machining the slots would just require fastening it square on the manual mill bed and cranking the wheels.  In other words, a lot less time and effort involved.

I have no doubt they're a quality vendor, I just can't see paying that much for shipping to get goods from across the pond.

Maybe it's different for what you're ordering.

I ordered the hand wings and also the fork and swing arm sliders from them and the shipping $ was not bad at all IMO, maybe just smaller weight items I guess...

This looks exactly like the Projekt D helmet locks but it costs more, even with shipping from Taiwan. Did you select the mail option from Projekt D? The cost isn't too bad with that option.

"This lock kit can ONLY BE USED WITH OUR CUSTOM RACKS. We have developed a helmet lock kit"

The locks look absolutely identical to Projekt D.  However, the bar that separates them is different.  In the larger photo, you can see that the locks do not fall under the rack bolts.  Theirs has the locks significantly closer together, covering the tailight.  Blech!

Well, I bit the bullet and went with the Projekt D rack and helmet locks.  Originally I was going to get the Cee Bailey's headlight protector through them as well which is what resulted in the $108 shipping fee I mentioned above.  Even without the headlight protector the shipping was $58, which I still find to be a little on the salty side.  Gotta do what ya gotta do to get the goodies ya want I guess.

I don't recall my shipping on the helmet locks to be excessive.  Perhaps the rack is really heavy/bulky??  Do keep in mind they are shipping, first class, from halfway around the world (Taiwan).
