PR3 190/50 ZR17 (back ordered?)
« on: June 10, 2011, 09:29:20 AM »
I was looking up Michelin PR3 costs for the rear on my 2008 C14 (190/50 ZR17) .. in case my flat cannot be permanently patched ..

Questions:

1. What price (if you ordered online with shipping) did you get?

2. If you had a dealer install .. what price did you pay?

Note: It seems the 4 online sites show the rear (PR3) tire backordered ......

The place I bought my bike from in Kaukauna, WI will match online prices so I normally pay whatever motorcycle-superstore.com has the tires listed for (currently $188 for the 50, $196 for the 55).  They charge $35 per tire if its on the bike, $25 off the bike.  I know to some people $10 doesn't sound like much for the added time of removing tires yourself, but if I remove the tires I can stop in whenever and they will mount the new ones in 15 minutes.  If I want to bring my bike in, I have to pre-schedule and leave the bike there for an hour or two which isn't always an option for me.

I should also add when I bought my PR3 front last month it was also listed as "backordered" and even my dealer originally said it would be as well but it still arrived in 5 days.  I would say order it now either way - I don't believe in patching motorcycle tires.  Sure they are expensive but unlike a car tire, motorcycle tire failure will almost always hurt.

Was just told by the local Kawasaki Dealer that PR3 shipments are Delayed now to the end of SEPT.

My guess is either the PR3 is so great they oversold them

or

Some Quality / Design / Production issue has occurred

Any one see a recall or similar shipment issues with the PR3?

With the back order and possible quality questions here, should we be leary of the PR3's?
I can't see any advantage of going with the 3's other than supposed improved wet weather performance.
I'm in AZ so it's a non-issue for me- going with another set of the PR2's.  I've got almost 14k miles on the rear tire now- I've NEVER gotten that kind of mileage from a motorcycle tire. Why switch....

I bought the 55 sidewall series PR3 rear 2 weeks ago.  Tho't it'd be a 'softer' riding tire, too.  Impressed with the posts here.

I use a rear 70 series sidewall on my Wing and have had good experience with it as well.  Keeps from dragging parts a bit, somewhat more cushy ride, corrects the speedometer, too.  Just my experience.

Looking forward to hooking up the new sneakers in a bit.

55 is the center of the tire.  Its a little higher than the 50, and turns in faster/handles much better.

That's what I'm looking forward to experiencing.

The 70 on the Wing is difficult to turn on the center stand when new.  I have to use a 1/4 inch piece of plywood under the center stand initially.  After a few 1000 miles, the tire does turn on the center stand without the plywood .  Not sure this will be the case with the 55 PR3 on the C14, tho.

I just installed a set of PR2's myself and they are GREAT.  Feels like a new bike.  Well any new tires will cause that I guess.  I was dismayed with the relatively short life of the OEM Bridgestones although the traction was decent.

Dang you got some nice mileage out of those PR2's...    I'm in Chandler, AZ myself and had a set of PR3's put on a few months ago and getting ready to replace the rear...  It has about 8k on it and could probally go another 2k at most but I am going on 3 day trip to San Diego begining of August and would rather ride on fresh tire than 90% worn out one...  I agree though and so does the dealer that only difference from PR2 to PR3 is wet weather handling.

Hit me up if you want to do some riding...  I am growing a little tired of the Cruiser crowd and the pure Sportbike crowd...  One rides so slow and gets scared at the slightess curve in the road and the other group rides so fast that most times one or two end up go down.  One extreme to the other......

Please explain what you mean by this.

Edit for clarification: I am not asking what the tire manufacturer means by the 55, I am asking Steve what he means by the bolded statement above.

Actually it's the percentage of the side profile compared to the tire width. The 55 stands for 55% of the width. Or to be more exact 55% of the 190mm of the C14 rear tire, which would be 104.5mm, compared to 95mm on the 50 series tire!

Bob is correct ... as usual.   8)

I can't speak for the C14, but the 70 series sidewall vs the 60 series on the Goldwing makes a BIG difference in carving curves (yes, it can be done on the Wing), and adds some comfort, too.
