Big boy suspension setup.
« on: September 27, 2015, 12:12:43 PM »
I'm not a small guy. I enjoy a good fat joke though. Anyways looking to get my suspension setup for the bike. I have set it up on my 08 and 2010 but have no idea where I had my settings. If anyone say in the 280lb range has settings that work well for them I would appreciate a good starting point. Thanks for the help. The main reason I'm looking for the easy button is I really don't have anyone that will help me with this sort of thing.

Thanks guys for the replies. I had looked through the forums before posting the question. I was looking for the easy button so to speak. I have a lot of tools but believe it or not I don't have many useful metric measuring devices. When I looked at the bike I remembered seeing three rings last time I set the preload on the forks. So I went with that. Set the rear a whole bunch of clicks in and sat on it and it felt like sitting on the bleachers at my kids ball games. I think I settled in on 18 clicks pre 1 1/4 damp rear. 3 clicks out damp front. I went for a nice ride through the country and it is way better. I also took off my heli risers and put my new kawi touring seat on. Bike is better than ever.

On the back, I went 1 and 1/2 out just cause my wife likes it better and I'm not getting on the ground every ride. This is counter intuitive, but 12 clicks with my wife on the back - she wants smooth, I go slow with her on it.  Alone, I go 20 clicks, I don't go slow.

Up front, I leave it at 3 clicks for smooth and still sporting.  I see three rings and part of the way to 4th.  Maybe 3 and 1/3 rings???  I don't mess with the front whether she is on or not.

I am 230, she is 120 or less.  Sounds like you are in the ballpark for an all round performing setting for what the stock suspension can do.  Maybe try 20 clicks on the rear and 1 1/2 out to see if that is more compliant and still sporty enough.

Hi,
       I'm 6'8" and 275#.

I just went the Ohlin's route as I could never get the OEM like I wanted!

Admittedly I bought used off of E-bay, but still not cheap!

Some people are going with the Traxxion AK-20 carts in the C14 forks or buying OEM ZX-14 forks and rebuilding those (more adjustable)

Then going with the Penske shock (from Traxxion also) which is cheaper than the Ohlin's route, but still very nice!!!

Just another option if you can't get the "harsh" out of your ride (I couldn't)

I'm 6'4" about 300 lbs with all my gear and I've been playing with mine lately and I think I'm getting close to what I want. Bike felt decent before but I was bottoming out in the front and I was cupping tires at 4500 miles. So I went drastic I don't have my number in front of me but I tightened down the front and rear probably over twice of what it was (think om at 7mm on the front). I also went with the 55 tear tire.Must be working because the last few hundred miles I've been able to lean her over and do this.

Hi,
       Yes!

Cornering and turns are where a better suspension set up is going to shine!

IMO under 200# the OEM will probably work but go over that or two up and I think the OEM suspension suffers??? :'(

But hey, you got a deal to begin with on the bike!

No harm to upgrade a bit!
