FOB Cost?
« on: September 28, 2015, 11:02:47 AM »
I just want to check and see if this cost is reasonable.

I have been quoted a new FOB for the used 2012 I just purchased at $350 (incl taxes) - plus $42.50 to program.

Does that sound about right?  Texas dealer.

thanks

You have at least one fob for the bike now right?

The price that you mentioned sounds about right for a dealer but you can buy fobs online and have your dealer do the programming.

There's two types of fobs. I'll just call them large and small, do a search here to find the differences. The large fob goes for around $200 and the small for $35. Plus the price of the keyblank.

Ron Ayers wants $267.87 and another $11.31 for the key blank that goes in the FOB.

Be sure to get the correct key blank as there are two types, an A and a B

Also be sure to bring all your FOBs (both active and passive) with you for the programming. The passive chip (present in all FOBs) must be programmed in when the the passive chip present in your new active FOB is programmed. Be sure to remove the battery from your new FOB to test the passive portion of it (while any other active FOBs you may have are out of range) before leaving the dealer. At $35.00 the passive FOBs are a pretty good deal (relatively speaking). On a trip I bring the active FOB and the passive FOB with me, and I have an additional passive FOB at home ready to be FedExed to me by my wife if needed.

Buying used large fobs online can be a bit dicey.  You have to know the id number and typically that's on the bag it came in.   If you buy used, you have to have that number as it's not on the fob externally or internally.  National security you know.

Ok,

so its a little complicated, so I think I'll go with an extra FOB per the quote and live with it. I have a history with keys.

thanks

I have a history with keys.

Yeah, me too. I've had better luck since I went nuts with lanyards.

(the stove knob key in the 3way clamp is just a joke, to many the others are a joke as well, and yet for me a necessity  ::) )
I still managed to lose the blue one on the far left as I motored down the highway with it swinging in the breeze hanging out of my topcase.
The wife suggested I use those big sticks that the gas stations put on their bathroom keys.  :P ::) :battle:

My trick is so much easier.  The active fob NEVER leaves my riding jacket's inner, zippered pocket.   Never.  I carry a cut key I use for the bags.  If I am on any trip (not just a few hours ride), I will also carry the small passive fob with me, on my person (like pants pocket) as an emergency spare.
