Powerlet install - panel removal
« on: September 13, 2015, 04:04:07 PM »
Hey all.  Since the fall weather is quickly arriving here in the midwest, I've been wondering how best to hook up my heated gear.  On my old wing, I just had the coax pigtail tucked behind a side panel.  While I'm sure I could still do that with a little wire-fishing, I was hoping to do something a little cleaner and more permanent.  I've seen some pictures on here of powerlets installed in the side panel below the seat, just below the Concours 14.  Since you are all clearly the smartest bunch of motorcycle enthusiasts out there (you did get a Connie, right?), I was wondering if there was anything to pulling those side panels off?  When I pull the seat, I see the hex-bolt there on the top.  What else is holding that panel on?

It doesn't look like there should be much more to it, but I've gotten myself into some interesting situations saying "how hard could it be?"  :)

Thanks in advance!

Just remove the screws under the seat and remove the plastic rivets on the "underside" of the side panels and then pull them off! They do have a strip of rubber that helps hold them in under tension but once you get the screws and rivets out it's a piece of cake!

Regarding the rivets...get something "pointy" and use it to "push" the center of the rivet "in" and then the rivet will release and you can pull them out (I think there are 3 on each side). Do the opposite to install the rivets...pull the center piece out (not all the way), push the rivet body back into the hole and then push the center of the rivet (which is sticking out at this point) back into the rivet until it is flush with the installed rivet body and you're finished!

interesting...I have an 08 and when I removed the side panels to notch them during my trailer hitch install, all of the rivets I removed had to be punched out from inside the bike, as they were not the push pin type.... they were the wratcheting christmas tree style...they were a royal p.I.t.a. to remove.
I'll have to look at the microfiche to see if they switched to push pin ones for more recent years.
thanks for the info
