Leak (weep) Clutch Hydraulic and Shifter Arm (Shaft)
« on: May 28, 2011, 12:17:41 PM »
Was doing the rear end noise video & Murphs fender extender / Cox rad guard and ....

I noted some small seepage / leaks on the engine clutch hydraulic housing and the gear shifter arm / shaft on my 2008 C14.

(See image)

Anyone else have similar or have suggests as to if such is a "real" concern?

Thanks in advance

First time someone has brought that to our attention.  Assuming I fall down on the correct side (Memorial day alcoholic activities) I'll take a quick peek.

That looks like a minor leak that should be fixed when you get around to it in my opinion. It is either engine oil or clutch hydraulic fluid but I would think it would be hydraulic fluid as the clutch slave cylinder is more likely to leak then the clutch push rod seal because the slave cylinder seal is much larger and less well lubricated. If the bike is under warranty, I would suggest taking it to a dealer and having them take a look and repairing whichever side is leaking. If not, you may want to do it yourself; pull the slave cylinder off the bike and look around inside it and the engine casing seal where the clutch push rod goes through. If it is the slave cylinder leaking, it would probably be best to get a new slave cylinder rather than just a piston seal as they are relatively inexpensive ($80 if memory serves) and you get a new seal and a new cylinder; a seal alone may not cure the problem and then you will have to buy both the seal and then the slave ass'y anyway.

If it is the engine side, you will have to replace the seal around the pushrod that operates the clutch. Not sure how much work that is but I suspect you can pop the seal out and fit a new one with everything (read: engine and engine cases) in place. If not, it is going to be an ugly job. A look into the service manual should tell you how that seal is replaced if you plan on doing it yourself.

Thanks for posting that up.  While I was doing my first extensive cleaning of my C14 this year I got down and noticed that mine was leaking also.  It looks almost like yours (class 1 leak for you military guys) so I guess I will see if my dealer will take care of it.

I just had the clutch slave replaced and the casing about two weeks ago.  The brake fluid had chewed up the paint on the casing.  All covered under warranty.
Two weeks on and I have a bad engine oil leak from the same place.  I guess it's going back so they can fix it again  :banghead:.  I first noticed the leak because the clutch had next to nothing when cold in the morning.  Gave it a couple of pumps and it was enough to get me to the dealer without grinding gears.

I hate leaks, but hate both fixing them myself or paying the dealer to fix them. (ALSO I HATE MORE ... having an extended warrantee and not having it cover them)

If you have similar leaks and get them fixed (or request and have them reject the fix) under warrantee at the dealer please post the details.

The shift arm on my '08 has very similar looking crap on it, I really thought it was something splashed on the shaft.  I don't see any leakage around the clutch master cylinder.  Mine is still covered under the extended warranty, so Kawasaki will probably say it is "normal".

I will wipe mine off and see if the gunk comes back.  My guess is that it will eventually.

If you look at the parts fiche for the gear change mechanism and look at the shifter it refers you to look at the crankcase for the seal.  In looking at the crankcase for a similar looking part in about the same place it looks like 92049-1520 Seal-oil TC14245 is the part you're looking for.  At least that's my best guess.

I've had a similar leak for around 70k miles. Every once in awhile, the clutch lever feels weird....engagement (friction) zone changes. Is always temporary. I regularly r/r the clutch fluid using a Mityvac. The leak has not gotten worse so I have not addressed it.

I almost order that but that is for the gear change shaft

Are you talking about internal to the clutch slave cylinder?
