Tires and Oil
« on: April 17, 2015, 07:31:05 PM »
That got your attention.

I ordered the PR4 GTs today. I had to take the bike in for state inspection, yes, Pennsylvania has it, but it is really no hassle. The bike passed fine, but I will be moving temporarily to Branson, MO in May and will be there until November. I didn't think the back tire had enough left for a 850-900 mile trip so I decided to get new ones.

I have been running the PR3s and they did very well. They still handle nicely even with the wear.

I realized, unless I forgot a set, that I am only on my third set of tires counting the originals. I am at 27,000 miles. Not a bad average per set of tires. I had Angels then the PR3s. I got 10,200 miles out of the stock rear tire and 8,200 out of the front so it sounds about right.

I also ordered four caliper bolts to replace the mangled bolts currently on the bike courtesy of a dealership monkey. I posted about it here: http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=17609.0

Oh, I changed the oil tonight as well.

I cannot believe the mileage is so low on the bike. In the first three months I owned this bike, I put 8,000 mile on it. I kept riding a lot until 2012 when a woman came to live with me. I think they call her my wife. Thankfully she likes to ride too but I don;t just jump on the bike and ride across country like I did before when I lived alone. Sigh...

Does she take up too much room in the saddle bag?

You wanna put some wear on those things?
Come ride Arkansas with me in the beginning of June. Not far from Branson at all.
Let me know. We can wear those things down to nothing in three days. I've done it. 8)

Sounds good. I won't have a lot of time to do trips, but I will be able to ride most every day. I will work every day but Mondays.

I have always gotten decent mileage out of tires around here. I attribute it partly to the fact a lot of the riding is on twisty roads so the sides wear too.  ;D

I was happy that the dealership matched the price that Revzilla advertised online. I prefer buying from the dealer if I can since I am happy they are there and want them to stay in business. I don't buy everything at a dealership, but if I can and the price isn't horribly high I do. The nice thing is, no shipping on top of the price and many times it is there the next day. The tires will be there Tuesday but unfortunately I won't be around until May 1. I have to leave Monday or Tuesday for a ship.

My worst mileage on a rear tire was 3,900 on a Metzler M-5 (photo), the best was 12,500 on a Michelin PR2.  The fronts last much longer for me.  That Metzler was a grippy tire though.  I had great fun with it in the twisties out here in the Pacific Northwest.  I recently had to replace a rear tire while on the road in Central Oregon.  All they had was a Bridgestone S20 (Hypersport), which replaces the old Bridgestone BattleAx BT-016.  Softer compound than the PR2, wider contact patch when leaning over.  Should wear very quickly.  It felt great at speed in the mountains, but I'd prefer the new Michelins over any other tires.  I just passed 120,000 on my 08 C14 and I've been through many brands of tires including Metzlers, Pirelli, Dunlop, Michelin, and different compound Bridgestones.

PR2s were good to me. I got almost 17,000 miles on 2 different sets of them I have gotten about 10,000 miles out of the stock tires on my 2008 and 2010. Only 5,500 miles on my 2011, but that bike had issues.
I am currently running PR4GTs on my 2010 and have almost 6,000 miles on them. No sign of wear.
I am currently running Continentals on my 2012. It came with a new set, and have about 3,000 miles on them. Starting to show signs of wear.

You need to ride more for certain. I have four kids and a wife and manage to get in at least 20,000 miles per year. I just ride to work, so you just need to live 3 states away from your job like me.
