replacing brake lines
« on: December 12, 2014, 11:41:08 PM »
according to the manual, brake lines should be replaced every 4 years, but my dealer said that it is very expensive so what they do is have a thorough check at them instead. However, did anybody here changed them? and if so, did you put original replacements or did you go for steel lines? and if so, any improvement on brake feeling, resistance to fading, etc.?

Haven't replaced mine, Martin.  Brakes are fine.   I think at some point they might need doing but right now they feel as good as they did when I bought the bike in 07.  Some have replaced with after market, though.  I imagine it would be a bear to get them bled.

That schedule is probably about as ridiculous as changing the spark plugs and checking the valve lash.  Just another C.Y.A. thing.

I replaced the front lines on my 08 with braided stainless steel after one of my self inflicted incidents, I am sure Jim will recall. After a tire change I forgot to tighten my fender bolts and ended up running over my own front fender. This resulted in a severe stretching of the oem brake lines (and the expulsion of a large amount of fluid when the lines broke loose from the fender and recoiled back) :yikes: After that the brakes lines needed replacement and I went with Goodrich IIRC. They look and work great. There was a very noticeable improvement over the stretched OEM lines but I cannot say they are better than new, undamaged OEM.

I am spoiled.  Stock rubber brakes lines suck in my opinion (even when brand new).
I dont wait 4 years-- or 4 days. I replaced sucky rubber hoses with SS lines ASAP. I own 4 bikes and all have SS lines (except for the KTM- those bikes always come with SS lines stock from the factory) All high end bikes have SS lines stock from the factory for a reason.
The difference is fantastic and  SS lines are good for the rest of your life.
Murphs sells them for your bike I  beleive.
