Anyone have a water well?
« on: September 04, 2014, 05:46:50 PM »
My house was built in 1926. It has well in the back yard that's no longer used for the house. The well head was covered. I mounted this pump to use for watering the flowers and washing the cars.

I tested the water and its safe to drink if there ever is an emergency. I really wanted this pump. Its a deep well pump and twice the price as my shallow well pump though.

My drop tube is 20 feet. My water level is around 15 feet. I measured the well depth with some rope and a piece of steel, I ran out of rope at about 120 feet and it never hit bottom, so I don't use a lot of water at any one time. Lowering the drop tube is easy if needed though. Anybody else have a well with a pump? Lehman's hardware is located the middle of the largest Amish population in the country, they got some serious stuff there if you ever want to get off the grid or back to a simpler way of life, or, if you just like old stuff, or stuff that looks old. Most all is made in the U.S. but some is China.

Used to be tons of them around here, but the state won't allow/recognize water wells less than 50' deep anymore and so existing ones have to be capped. So, not many hand pumps anymore in my part of the country.
Sounds like your well is deep, but the water comes up to an easily pumped depth, which is a pretty common deal.
My home well is 119' as I recall. 4" submersible 220 volt pump. The original Aeromotor brand was put down in 1979 and was still working fine when I replaced it preventively last fall. Hope the new one lasts as long, but I doubt it.

This street bike thing is all new to me.
Snowmobiles-I have a bunch of those.

There are also many capped gas wells in the area by me too. Hundreds. I sure wish I had one my property. But suburban neighborhoods aren't a good place to drill a well these days. I'm not sure why my water well is so deep. All the equipment to revert back to well water for the house is still in place.

For washin the car ya sometimes have to be wary of the calcium content and what not. My friends car (black) turns white because of the natural minerals in the water. I myself have artesian well water and it washes up just fine.

I have a shallow well in southern Maine. It is cleaner than any drilled well by far. Love it.

is this a drilled well with a full casing? or a dug well?
what diameter?
I've had drilled wells in Ohio, and virginia, and also Dug wells in both states, my drilled wells were no wheres near that deep, Ohio's were about 60ft and Va was even less, about 35ft, both had casings about 24" dia, and both had water sitting within 12 ft of ground level.. my dug well in Noble County was about 30 ft deep, and 32" diameter, rock lined, and had water about 10 ft below ground level..
I cant imagine trying to pump with a hand pump, more than 40ft head, it would suck.
Man, there are really cheap electric pumps...the one I replaced in Va wasn't bad at all.I think about
$220.. and I could pull 100 ft with it if I wanted it. I ran it into an accumulator with a bladder, and had 70 psi easily, could have had more but dialed it back because I didn't trust the old plumbing...

it was hard to get used to tasting chloramine when we moved back up here, can't say I missed it for 10 years...

Rich, the well has a 6" casing that extends about 10 inches above the ground that I installed the well flange onto. The pump I have cost $299, the green pump cost between $500-600. As my drop pipe is only about 15 feet and 2" in diameter, I only need around a half gallon to prime the pump before I get water and then its easy pumping till the water level drops below the drop pipe, which comes out to around 15 gallons or so. It tested out clean a year ago, but I've never tasted it. I grew up on well water though, so I'm sure its ok for me.

Strawboss, are you intent on a hand pump?
For the $$ your talking about you, I think you could go to a small electric.
Harbor Freight has the pump.
If you even need to use the well water it would be a simple hookup to get water into your home..

The hand pump is merely a cosmetic thing, I have an old house, I have an old pump, its not used for anything except watering flowers, all the equipment for changing over to pump water is still in place, I merely have to close a valve and start up the electric pump and fill the holding tank in the basement. I just like old stuff and an old pump is something you don't see much of anymore, but I still see a lot of old wells capped off or covered with giant cement blocks or stones to prevent kids from falling in.

the house I grew up in had a 18ft sand point well on it. water still comes out of it and still in use. water tests better than municipal water for sure.  Close to a river in a sandy part of Kansas doesn't hurt.
wish I had a well and some solar panels. I am completely sick now of suburbia and would take my old crap country house back anytime.
