Garmin Street Pilot 2820 on a Touratech locking cradle?
« on: August 08, 2014, 05:42:41 PM »
Buddy has this setup from his old bike (BMW sport-touring bike, cannot remember the model #). The Touratech locking mount attaches to a rod that spans over the triple tree (aftermarket). I am going to get the whole setup from him, but was thinking of not using that mount as I don't think I can get adapters to work with the bar mount and my Heli risers and everything.

I was thinking of using the Ram Ball on the side of the Heli risers. Thoughts?

  • It's only really cold if you fall down in it.
    • C-14 farkles you almost cannot ride without.

I am not really sure of what you are asking but I think you want to mount a 2820 (easy boys!) on the Ram ball you already have and are asking if that can be done? If that is right then yep, I did that very thing. You will need a 2820 cradle (from Garmin) and then a Ram ball mount that bolts to the Garmin mount. Then a Ram clamp to go between the two Ram balls (one on the bike, one on the back of the Garmin mount).

By the way, the 2820 was my favorite Garmin right up to an including the Zumo 665. The screen was a bit small but it was crystal clear and very easy to see. The display was customizable and you could put actual useful information there along with the map display. It is a dated unit now and does not have a lot of the latest 'standard' GPS features but still, as a motorcycle navigation unit, I loved mine and thought the step "up" to a Zumo 550 was really a step down.

Yeah, I was thinking of buying one of these:

And just using the Ram Ball on the Heli riser instead of the stud that comes with the kit.

I was just wondering if anyone here had installed a bar across their dash area to mount something like this. I was originally figuring I would sell the mount and bar on Ebay or Craigslist since I wasn't sure I could use it, but figured I would ask opinions here first.

What you show there will work, that is a Ram clamp and will attach to any Ram ball, such as the one on your Heli Bar risers.

I worked on a friend's bike that had the 'cross handlebar mount' mounting plate on it and it was OK. Kind of in the way of the key, and it had to be assembled with the handlebars loosely so that it would align but it was a very nice, rugged mount. The Ram ball and clamp arrangement will give you more adjust-ability I think because the clamp is very free to pivot all around. But that plate was custom fit to a C-14 and would not fit a BMW; I suspect the one you will get from a BMW will not fit your C-14 either.

Both are the same. I assume you didn't mean that.

The locking mount itself should be fine it's getting the rod going across that is the issue. Unless I get a rod to take the place of the bolt to hold the handlebar grip? I seem to remember people at one point doing something like that.

Yeah, that is basically the same as the other one as I won't need the lower ball anyway since I already have a Ram ball that goes on the Heli Bar risers.

I ordered the one I showed the image of. If I don't like it, I will look into a bar I can use the locking mount on.

I won't have this on the bike 100% of the time, probably more like 5% of the time since I don't need it to get to and from work.

For those of you who have had a StreetPilot that connects with Bluetooth, do you also have a Sena or similar?
I am now trying to figure everything out. I have a Nexus 5 phone (Android) and can connect both the StreetPilot and the Sena at the same time, but the Streetpilot wants to handle phone calls, which it cannot do without an external headset (that is built in to the Sena, which wasn't conceived of when the Streetpilot came out).

Thoughts on how I can have both the Sena (for phone and music) connected at the same time as the Streetpilot with just the directions?

Thanks for that. I had to update the firmware as I was on 3.1 and they are at 5.1 now, but it seems like it worked. I will have to try it to confirm, but so far so good.
