Add-A-Circuit! Which fuses are hot only when bike is on!?
« on: November 01, 2014, 10:32:53 AM »
Hey guys I wanted to add some lighting to my bike. I did a fender eliminator and realized that my plate was no longer lighted so I wired some LEDs for that. After fudging around for a while, the only fuse that seemed to be hot when the bike is on is the horn. So I added the circuit to that. The rest seem to be hot all the damn time (the few that I tested). I plan on eventually adding a seat heater (though I might wire that direct to the battery) and accent lighting to the bike. Do you know of any others that are hot when running only? I did not test all of them and was just wondering what you would do in this case. I'm up for better ideas as I always wanna learn a better way! Thanks!

For low load draws the acc circuit, the cig outlet, the leads under the seat, and the leads in the boot left side dash are switched. 10 amps on '08/'09 and 5 amps '10 +. Heavy draw items should be direct to battery or better through a separate add on fuse box.

Thanks! It musta been they way mine was wired up, but the first one I went to was the cig lighter outlet one and my LEDs were constant on. as if it was always hot which perplexed me. I hooked my phone up to the outlet and it would only go on when the ignition was on BUT the LEDs remained lighted at all times. VERY weird.

LEDs pull so little power that they can actually stay "on" for many seconds or even sometimes minutes just running of the residual power in whatever transformer is used.  So if you were using a transformer, that could explain it.  The lighter plug is switched (ignition) power on all C-14's (unless one rewires it completely).

It would have been nice if Kawasaki had added a switch to easily switch the lighter from ignition to full-time power back in 2010 when they made some revisions.  Oh well.

Install a Fuzeblock and don't worry about it.

LEDs are such a small load that I would have just spliced them into the tail light wiring. No need for a fuse of their own.
