More oil leaks on my 2011
« on: April 15, 2014, 06:50:03 AM »
First my valve cover started leaking and now my differential is leaking oil on my rear rim. All by 16,000 miles on a 2011, what is up with Kawasaki and oil leaks?

My valve cover started leaking this year but it is a 2010 with 44,000 miles on it. Anyone know how hard it is to get a new gasket on there? I'm assuming I have to pull the tank but what else is involved?

You need to remove upper and middle fairings and remove the subframe just to get to the valve cover.  Fred Harmon's DVDs cover the valve adjustment procedure which includes stripping off all the stuff you need to get out of the way.  Just getting all the stuff off while watching the DVDs took me 4 hours.

For your rear diff. Did you by chance recently change the oil or top it off. There is a chance you maybe have too much oil in the diff. I learnt a handy hint on this forum last year. Top it up with the bike on its side stand not the center stand.

This wont let you put too much in. Just a suggestion.

Here is an update, I took it in to have the diff repaired and they had it a week. I finally got it back and it started leaking again. >:( I waited another week to make sure it was not residual oil from the leak but it just kept leaking. Back for another visit to the dealer, they took pictures and said they would talk to Kawasaki about it. Another week goes by, then three days later they call me to say that Kawasaki is shipping them a new diff for my bike. It goes in tomorrow for the new diff and hopefully this solves that leak. After all of that I bought the gaskets and I will fix the valve cover leak myself, I need to change the spark plugs and adjust the valves anyway.

Just wondering how u fixed it? Mine is leaking too. Every year the rr wheel & final drive housing is covered in oil. The bike rides fine, but don't think there should b oil all over the rr wheel

an entire new $1400 differential assembly under warranty is what they are trying tomorrow.

So, you have never adjusted the valves in 44K?

Uh oh.. that is not good.
Most likely its the cam sensor o ring and not the valve cover Mine was leaking at 24k
If you still have fuel in the tank, you are not lost yet

The dealer put the new differential in my bike and I still have a leak on my rear rim! I don't think they cleaned the inside of the hollow rear rim and there must be way too much lube on the splines. Time to fix it myself I guess. The other thing that pisses me off is I NEVER get any paperwork or a receipt from the dealer on warranty repairs either. I really wish there was a decent dealer near me.
My valve cover leak is gone but that is because I did it myself. I was also surprised that only 1 valve needed adjusted, all the rest were perfect.
