Factory 12V Connection Near Front Cubby
« on: April 29, 2014, 06:13:16 PM »
Hey guys, I haven't seen anyone mention this connection point before so I thought I would show you guys what I found tonight while digging around under the covers.

I pulled the top cover on the left side of the bike and under there you will see a big rubber cover. It is circled in the picture.

Under that cover is a bunch of connectors. While I was looking at the connectors I noticed 2 bullet connectors both unplugged. I thought it was odd but wasn't sure what they were. You can see them circled here.

I went to the other side to see what I could see and I saw the same bullet connectors but these ones were hooked up and when I followed the wires, they were hooked to the 12V socket in the dash.

I then realized what I had... an extra 12V plug on the accessory fuse. So I checked and...

So there you have it, a key-switched 12V source right by the handlebars on the 12V accessory circuit. It couldn't be much easier.

They are wired on the same circuit as the cig plug-in as are the ones under the seat. 10 amp on the first gen and 5 amp on the second gen. Be careful not to overload.

So there is another set under the seat? Excellent.

This will be hooked to a 12V to 5V converter and I will be adding a USB port to the glove box so I can put my phone in there and charge it.

There are a couple of photos in this thread: http://www.zggtr.org/index.php?topic=16693.msg205442#msg205442

They are normally tucked under/behind the ECU. So you may need to do some digging to find them. Also when you think that you have them, use a volt meter to verify as there are other wires that are in the same area that aren't hooked up as well. Oh, one more thing! These accessory power leads (both front & rear) are "switched power". Meaning that they only have power when the bike is on. You may have already known this, but there may be others that didn't.

if you would have done a search here about "accessory leads" you would have found a zillion posts on this... thank you for the pictures tho.

I would also caution you, and /or anyone else about "probing" leads on this bike without consulting the service manual.... Not something I recommend doing, you could easily probe canbus wires that could cause failures, or trigger things you don't expect... like failure codes on the dash lcd. just be prudent, and ask first if you don't know. someone here will likely be able to give a yea or nay on what wires are which...

A question here.  Noticed you mentioned canbus.  Are all C14's 1st and 2nd Gens made with a canbus system?

Yes, although Kwak refers to it as CAN Communications.  Nice write up in the beginning part of the service manual.

I wasn't aware those were there, and would never have thought to search for something I did'nt know existed.

Don't worry, I don't go sticking my probe in random places, it just isn't safe. I had looked through the service manual and didn't see any mention of these on first pass. Also, you would never use these connections for your CAN bus. The fact that the male bullet connector had no insulation meant it could only be one thing... ground. And when I saw the same connectors in the same spot on the other side I of the bike I was quite confident in what I had found was simply +12V and GND.

Good post, especially the part about not sticking your probe in random places.

The CAN bus connector on the bike is very different from bullet connectors, as you mentioned.
