2011 rear brakes
« on: June 13, 2011, 09:07:02 AM »
Hi everyone!

I was driving down the road today at about 60 mph, coming down a big hill to a stop sign, hit the hand brake lever only to slow down a bit, but noticed that the brakes immediately dragged heavily and there was the smell of brake pads burning in the air.  Pulled over and the rear rotor was extremely hot, bike didn't want to move a bit.  As I was trying to assess what was wrong, I could just barely move the bike forward and backwards.  I let it sit to cool down a bit, at first I thought it was a stone lodged in the pad or something along those lines, but didn't find a thing.  So, I switched it from Mode 1 to Mode 2 (the heavier front brake mode)   I pumped the hand brake lever, after it cooled down, the caliper did not drag on the rotor, but it felt a little squishy  the first few squeezes and then felt normal.  The brakes never dragged again all the way back home.  I got it in the shop and put the bike on the center stand, turning the tire to try to figure out what happened, testing the foot brake, would not stick at all.  However, I also noticed that in Mode 1 or Mode 2 of the brake coupling that the hand brake lever does not activate the rear brakes whatsoever.  Shouldn't the hand brake lever apply pressure to the rear rotor as well? This is a quick off the cuff response without any research what so ever.....but..I think the bike has to be moving (both wheels rotating) more than
3 -5 mph before the linked brakes will work in either mode. IIRC  Difficult to accomplish on the center stand.

Of course even if I'm correct, it doesn't explain your original problem of the rear brake dragging.

EDIT UPDATE...

K-ACT system does not function at
the speed of approx. 20 km/h (12
mph) or below when the brake starts
to be applied.

You need to report that to your dealer and have them look at it so it's on record.

Thats a good idea to stop by the dealer and have them check it out. I did go on a road that had just been tar and stone chipped just before it started. I though It might have knocked the stone free when I rolled it backwards. I've put almost 2000 miles on and  its been trouble free. I guess I will find out if the Dealer cares about the full area P exhaust flys out and pc5 I put on her. ;)Tater
