Any AF brats here?
« on: January 21, 2014, 06:39:08 AM »
Just wondering...  Spent time (as a kid) at Greenham Common, Lincoln AFB, Upper Heyford, Westover AFB, and Sculthorpe..  All those bases are 'dead' now except for Westover which is a Reserve base.

:salute: It's an interesting life being a brat.  Some parts of it were hell.   Roughly 3 years or so at a station and then you move on.  Hard to make long term friends that way.  It's always interesting to respond to someone saying...where you from?  We finally settled in southern VA in 1969 so when somebody asks, that's where I'm from.  At least you are lucky in that Scott isn't that far away.

My son spent six years at Canon and has been at Scott for seven. Clovis was a long haul. It's good to have them 2 hours away.

Marine Corps brat here. We got lucky and mainly stayed in one place. My brother was born in '62 at Camp Lejuene NC and shortly after, dad was stationed at Quantico and we moved to Woodbridge VA. Dad would go overseas and we'd stay put. Every time he came back, it was either Quantico or Headquarters in Arlington. He retired in 1974 and we moved to the Shenandoah Valley. I'd lived there longer than NoVA, so I refer to that as home. Now living in Fredericksburg.

Not sure what the norm is these days for average stints at a base.  Back in my day you were lucky to get 3 years, but that could have been due to what my dad did and bases changing wings and aircraft.  Dad was a piston type guy.  He never did hands on work with jets.  Most of our time was in SAC.   He was moved into TAC late in his career as a First Sergeant.

:salute: Close to me, eh? KG just east of you.

Didn't much care for those extended TDY's.  I don't know if you were living on base or off.  We typically lived off base until we got quarters on base.  I think the only base we went straight on to was Sculthorpe, but that was truly an exception as it was just being reopened as an annex of Lakenheath.  He went to Vietnam 67-68 and we had to move away from base life until he came back.  I truly hated living with civilians at the time.  Didn't much care for it.  I missed the security.  Didn't much like him leaving either.  Took an emotional toll on me.  I'm sure he wasn't thrilled with it, but he was a good airman and knew what he was doing.  He was an asset to the AF.
