Going for a ride on Christmas day.... maybe
« on: December 24, 2013, 01:48:23 PM »
Andrea and I often go for a bike ride on Christmas day and it is usually pretty interesting. Not sure about tomorrow though as the high is going to be 26. But there are parts of it that are almost surreal; there is a major shopping area a few miles from where we live- about five miles of four lane road packed with as many stores, strip malls and shopping centers that can fit (and maybe a few more). Honestly I don't even know the speed limit because it has never been anything even close to applicable, speeds of 0 to 6 MPH are common with lights about every 20 feet or so. But not on Christmas day! No traffic whatsoever and all the lights are green. I have never even seen as much as a single LEO on that stretch. Sorta' like being on the set of one of those post- apocalyptic TV or movie shows- it looks like a regular place but there are no people :-)

Yep, that's the one. You must be local to know the area.

26 is manageable with electrics.  Hope the roads are clear for you.  I might be out for a ADV tag, although my temps should be in the 40s.  Merry Christmas.

Ha! How does it go- small world.... but I would not want to paint it? My son used to work at Inskip.

I live in Coventry RI but the eastern part, not far at all from Inskip. In fact I bought a car from them last winter.

Yep, we have full electrics, head- to- foot. At low speeds it is OK (below, say 55 MPH) but at highway speeds 25 is too cold for extended riding. But I would like to get a ride in to the southern end of the state (hey, small state) and maybe get a coffee and sit on the seawall in Narragansett.

The biggest problem is getting geared up before actually getting on the bike- I find myself overheating and wanting to open my jacket to cool down but that too is a mistake. And we are going to be down in the temps. where my visor fogs up no matter what I do. Surely time for a Pinlock (sp?) but I really need a new helmet to make all of that work.

Fog City makes a glue in that works every bit as good as they advertise.  They even have one that does the darkening thingy ;)  Just make sure you get it positioned right the first time, aint no second chance.  Extremely soft, take the visor off to clean it and let it air dry.  I use warm soapy water with my fingers.  Shake it dry (easy there boys  ;) ) and it's good to go.

I'm probably riding down to southern VA on Saturday.  It is forecast to sunny and 48.  My type of weather.

Yes, and unpleasant evening to be sure. But I fixed that problem by moving one set of heated gear to the alternator side of the battery and it should not rear its ugly head again.

Yep, and any bunches of leaves left in the corners too. Plenty of sand on the roads too, at least near the edges. And finally, the tires never will warm up so it is like riding on plastic. Still, we have not been out in a couple of weeks now and it is bright and sunny so....

Christmas day I road to Naples Fl, why I brought my heated gear I'll never know. I guess because I'm used to riding due North of Tampa instead of South!
