Possible brake drag and intermittent noises...
« on: June 08, 2012, 11:50:17 PM »
2011 C14 with 4000ish miles: Two questions.
First- I recently returned home from the GCE Tour de Twist event in La Bresse, France only to find the front wheel covered with what I believe to be brake dust. I’m also picking up a slight squeal in the front wheel at low speed over time.  I manually spun the wheel and feel there is excessive drag as I can only get about one to one & a half full turns, if that…  I took the time to visit the local dealer to have everything checked out.  According to the service folks, with the exception of a relatively small buildup of grime which they cleaned, everything is in working order.  Not sure I agree with them on their assessment.  I’ve seen a few posts regarding dragging brakes and am wondering if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions?
Second- While riding at mid to higher speeds, I’m hearing an intermittent low level hissing noise, something similar to a pressure relief.  I’ve tried to isolate it to see if it happens while accelerating but can’t pinpoint it.   Has anyone experienced this and is it something I need to be concerned with?

Front brakes can hiss.

Do you happen to be using any aftermarket brake/clutch levers?

VJ, one thing that is interesting related to the hissing/buzzing noise I’m hearing.  I’ve recently installed the F5 interphone system into our set of helmets and swear I can hear the noise through a transmission of the intercom.  It sounds like a transmission from the other helmet without the voice at a very low level.  I’m a retired helicopter driver and have experienced high frequency vibrations through the tail rotor pedals.  I’m wondering if this could be a symptom of something similar.
Conrad, NO aftermarket levers, all stock at this point.  The dealer asked the same question, said there were reported problems with some levers inducing unwanted pressure in the system.  That shouldn’t be the case in this instance.  I plan to pull the brake pads today to check wear etc.  This will also allow me to spin the wheel to see is the freedom of movement remains restricted.  If restricted, I’ll remove the wheel and check the bearings.

I would think you would have some drag with disc brakes.  I'm not having a problem with mine and will check how much rotation I can get off of mine.
