Torque Values List
« on: September 12, 2013, 11:51:59 AM »
Has anyone compiled a chart, spreadsheet, or other document giving the torque values for the commonly removed fasteners on the C14?  I searched "torque" with a dozen other words next to it, and I didn't turn anything up.  Thanks!

Yep, there is complete listings of everything in the factory service manual.
If you are thinking of doing any service whatsoever, you might want to buy one.

Torques without proper instructions are worthless....

PM sent.

I can help if you need the proper spec. for a few specific items. I will send you the values through a private message.  The service manual lists hundreds of items all which have a specification.  Without narrowing your focus it would be way too much to list.

Man of Blues - sheer brilliance!  I definitely will need a service manual to change tires and brake pads.  Probably I will completely destroy my bike if someone posts the torque specs for the axles and brake caliper bolts for me on here.  I'm glad your hanging around to share such wisdom.

Why thank you so very much for the compliments.
Now, if you would simply ask for the torque on a specific few bolts, I'm sure someone would oblige,
Want us to give them all to you, is a bit silly.

And, No, as far as I know, nobody here has compiled and posted said information since I started here....

the torque rating in the book for the oil filter is 13 foot pounds.....use it.  ::)

That's perfect.  I was going to put something similar together, but I have been too busy in the months since I picked up my Connie.  I figured that someone else had already done something similar.  I don't mind the ribbing and ball busting that goes on around here, but it's also nice to get your question answered.  I haven't had a lot of luck with the search function on this site.

Man of Blues, I was just messing with you, of course.  My experience is that service manuals can be very good.  I've owned several for cars that were used extensively.  But they don't always tell you the things you need to know, like just hand-tighten your oil filter (plus a half-turn max if you need it).

Another great example is the torque value for the rear axle nut.  94 ft/lbs seems a little risky to me.  I would go with a little anti-seize and dial that number back about 15-20% to account for the lubrication.  The nut does have a cotter pin to hold it in place after all.  Thanks for all the replies, even yours MoB!   :chugbeer:

no problem TJ, sorry to have been such a fuddy-duddy... if you had asked the specific bolts i would have looked them up for you.

as for the Chart, surprised Jim didn't pop up and point to it for you, he posted it.

A lot of us here that do mechanical work on these bikes for ourselves, and others, tend to tighten some things (like axle nuts) in a manner that is called "guttentite"
What we consider more than adequate, within reason, and can still be removed on the road if needed, using hand tools we carry, not saying torque isn't critical on some things (more often to prevent fastener damage), but sometimes it can hinder ya.

best of luck and ride safe,

"guttentite"
Is that sort of like using a "SOTP" torque wrench - "Seat of the pants"

I believe "SWAG" is more accurate, due to the scientific aspect!
I only have a 1/2in torque wrench. I need to pick up a 3/8in from Sears or Harbor Freight.

pick up a 1/4" also... needed for doing valves.... ;)

filling tires without a gage is a Swag 8)

but, guttentite is a viable measurement... it's googleable....
it's a proven method, and is used kinda like Farkle..... stuff is stuff, but Farkles are better... so is Guttentite. ;)
