Can I take back that phone call?
« on: August 12, 2013, 04:53:06 PM »
So I work for a company which has a Corp office and 8 regional offices. I am a manager at one of the regions. We were recently acquired by another company, this company doesn't really maintain my position in their regional offices. Well a peer of mine who works in one of the other regional offices called me the other day to say... "I heard there is going to be a reduction in workforce for our department coming August 26th." Ok, granted I'm glad he tought of me enough to call me to let me know, but this waiting is killing me. I can't really tell anyone else at work, I've asked my boss, who hasn't heard anything, so he says. I almost wish I could go back and not take that call. I've decided I'd rather not know it might be coming. Still no word yet on what might happen, latest is the 26th will actually be the day of more information, not something happening. I have savings, I can get another job, but the waiting is not fun at all.

Ho hum. Whoa is me.

That's a tough one Brent. I know the feeling of waiting on something, whether it be good or bad. It consumes just about every thought in your head.

I worked at IBM for 10 years with that  :censored: sword hanging over my head.  The stress finally became unbearable so I left with a big wad of their cash.  I feel for you.

Man I feel for you.  I lost my job with no advance notice this past January.

Your worst fears are your enemy.  While its highly unlikely that they will come true, they will mess with your head if you let them.

Stay positive, know you have skills and move forward.

You have an advantage in the advanced warning while still employed.

Make it a positive and get a jump on making your next step.

I was once told by a wise man "Always have a current resume floating"  you just never know when a better career may come knocking on your door.
When I was let go due to my limited schedule I didn't like the cut in pay, but I did land a dream job training new and returning riders, on road and off.  Which BTW is turning into a positive income and to have a job that is tied into your passion?  Yep, priceless.

A closing door can yield many open ones but it can take time unfortunately.

Good luck Brent and stay positive.  I guess in this world now you always have to keep a resume up to date and constantly be networking.

When I worked for Equifax in Houston, they came in and said we are closing your office on such and such day.  If you stay, you get one month plus 2 weeks pay for every year you were employed.  I was looking at 8.5 months, plus vacation... but I had to hang around for a year.  It sucked, and I had an outcome!

I hope you get what you want... good luck... and remember, Any Weather is Pepsi Weather!  8)

The company I work for went through a rough patch couple years back. Both wife and I worked for the same company and we were pretty nervous about both getting let go. Wife's department was a bit more shaky then mine, although she was pretty darn good at what she did - it was not gonna be her, but someone else. Finally she said screw it and applied at this other company about 40 miles from home. Not only did they hire her right than and there, they offered her about 20% more money then she made at my company.
Like someone said, sometimes it takes a situation like that to open new door. I have been with this company for 13 years and I have been thinking about switching for quite some time, but never made any attempts - just being complacent. But if I get into a situation like you, I will be hauling butt to get outta the door in no time. Wife is trying to get me to join her company...but my company came out of the rough patch, gave me a promotion and more money so I decided to stay put for now (guess they found out my wife was trying to recruit me !  :rotflmao:)

Kinda funny.... I lost mine after 17 yrs from... ironically enough, PEPSI!   :o

When the mothership bought up the 2 big bottlers.   But at least we knew it was coming - for 1.5 years in my case.

Good luck!

(and if it makes you feel any better, I may have some Pepsi stuff the wife would love for me to part with)

Hnag in there.

I'm in the same shape.  If it ever happens to me, I'm going on a 6 month bike trip then getting "another" job.  All in the name of "career excitement"

I thought about that as well. I just don't know if I'd want to spend that much of my savings. I did think about a week or two off though. Not sure I could manage it before starting the hunt. Of course I've always maintained my resume and I'm on monster, but I think I may contact a recruiter this time around.

I feel as if I don't buy a tent and go camping on the bike during such an opportunity, I may be cutting myself short in life.  But I've got warped thinking anyway!
