bad day of riding.
« on: August 11, 2013, 07:18:05 PM »
Not for me thankfully.  I posted this in the rides section, I think it might do more good over here.

Four years ago our town lost a brave young man in Iraq.  Yesterday was the third annual memorial ride.  It was a great day with a wonderful turn out.  I believe they said we had 125 bikes.
It turned out this year was a poker run. I hate poker runs for the obvious reasons.
Sure enough after the fourth stop three bikes tried to occupy the same location. Absolutely no safety gear on. One of the worst was a woman wearing shorts, tank top and flip-flops.
Together there was five people injured. Four out of the five had serious head injuries all of them had serious toad rash.
It was cheese grater pavement.

Drinking and driving do not ho well together.

The truly unfortunate ones got to go on a helicopter ride.

A great day of riding ruined because of recklessness.

Lost me at 'poker run'. Hope everyone survives, heals and learns. My prayers to the soldier and his family.

You can tell them, but they won't hear you. Sometimes you have to lay her down to understand it. ;)

One reason I'm a lone wolf for the most part.  Don't like large groups of bikes and HD riders like to ride closer than I prefer.  My brother in law had a brush with a near accident recently in a large group ride because someone did something stupid ahead of him.

Me too. Only a few people I feel comfortable riding with.

I'm with you guys.  I always ride in the back of the herd. It helps to keep an eye on the morons.
This will more than likely be my last Harley group ride.

I was the third person on the scene. I couldn't believe the amount of people that just stood around. I carry a trauma bag in my bike and I used almost everything in it. I am think I have one pair of gloves, my one way CPR mask, and the tourniquet.  Its amazing how many people are willing to help after people are already helping.
If you carry a first aid kit in your bike I wish that you would think about replacing it with a trauma kit.  A person is not going to die without a band aid.

Do you have a recommendation for which kit to get?

I carry one very similar to this one.

I try to keep it simple and compact. Its not hard to fill a saddle bag with a trauma kit.  All a person really needs is blood clotting bandages, lots of gauze, and God forbid a tourniquet.

If I'm riding w/ friends or riders I've been around before and trust, no problem... but others, I'm riding Sweep.

Sorry to hear about that... even Jay Leno's charity Love Ride isn't immune after 28 years... they had 2 riders killed last year.

Crashes aren't cool, especially if you're in the bunch that's crashing.

I too like a small group, usually people I know and are of a like mind and skill set (you know who you are ;) ). I carry first aid and it may have a triangular bandage/tourniquet, maybe gloves and a one way breather, I'll have to look again (it's a put together collection of stuff). I will look over the link and re-assess what I have and carry. Sorry to hear about the crash, hope everyone comes out ok and a bit wiser.
