Did I break my TPS sensor?
« on: June 21, 2016, 09:00:56 AM »
Changing tires and got distracted. Tire bead my have caught the TPS. Is it normal for you to beable to twist it a little and does it stick out from the rim with a spring behind it? Can't find my manual, never seen one before so am in panic mode! Thanks

Hopefully you're ok.  You wouldn't have a picture of it would you?

No, I should have taken one. I did find some pics on the site to compare mine too and it looked ok. I wish I would have looked it over beter before just to know. All buttoned up now and waiting for Murphto get me my new pads. Looking forward to riding this machine on new rubber.

Interesting that you mention this. The TPSes on my 08 sit almost flush with the rim. When I got my 09, neither TPS was working and I assumed it was just dead batteries. I installed new tires and pulled the TPSes to install new batteries. I was alarmed to see that these TPSes  stood out from the rims about 1/4 inch. I examined hem and could not find anything wrong and after installing new batteries they are both working. I keep finding little differences -improvements?- between the 08 and 09. Maybe they made a change the the TPS in 09 to try to make it work better. However with them sticking up like that ithey must be more vulnerable to damage during tire changing.

No, I should have taken one.

I do that all the time.  This last time I did it with the LED bulbs on the right side, I had half the panels back on and said "crap, again I forgot to take a photo" and took that side apart again so I could put it back and get the comparison photo.

I definitely suffer from "CRS"

Yes, they are mounted on a spring (Easy Boys!) and yes, they will freely rotate if you push on them a little. Nothing to worry about as long as you did not crack or outright break the outer casings; if they look OK they are almost certainly fine and will work as before. I have changed a lot of them and often have a tire bead slide across the top of a sensor without every damaging one (removing the sensor with the wheels and tires still on the bike).

It was your pics of a tutorial about servicing with out removing the tire that helped me compare to mine. I swear the rear one sat almost flush. Thanks all.

They can be assembled with the spring between the mounting stud head and the sensor, and that will leave the sensor up against the wheel but it is incorrect. The reason for the spring and the 'too long' stud (Easy Boys!) is so that the sensor 'floats' inside the wheel. The sensor should not touch the wheel at all, and it should not be rigidly mounted (Boys!) if installed correctly. It sounds as though your rear sensor (BOYS!) might have been installed incorrectly in the first place.

BTW- they will also install 'upside- down'. That apparently happened at the last tech. day I attended; I swapped the battery but someone else installed the sensor in the wheel and I believe he got it facing the valve stem the wrong way. Actually, the sensor will work OK like that except that it will never be turned on as the centripetal force is going the wrong way when they are mounted that way.

My rear one is probaley on wrong but it is going to stay that way until then tire. Good to know about the backwards mounting. I need to slow down and pay more attention sometimes.
